Chapter 8 - The Reckoning of Arthur Vance

News of the raid on L'Étoile du Lac sent shockwaves through international financial circles. By the time Julian’s private jet landed back in the United States, the Swiss Federal Police had issued a formal international arrest warrant for Arthur Vance for conspiracy, kidnapping, human trafficking, and corporate fraud.
Arthur tried to flee. At three in the morning, a private helicopter landed on the roof of Vance Holdings tower in Manhattan, prepared to fly him to a non-extradition country in South America.
As Arthur stepped onto the windy, rain-slicked helipad, clutching a briefcase packed with bearer bonds and diplomatic passports, the heavy steel access doors banged open.
A dozen armed federal agents flooded the rooftop, their searchlights blinding the billionaire as he backed toward the idling chopper.
"Arthur Vance!" an agent shouted through a bullhorn. "Step away from the aircraft! Put your hands on your head!"
Arthur sneered, waving his arm at the pilot. "Lift off! Get us out of here!"
Before the helicopter blades could spin to full speed, the engines suddenly sputtered and died, black smoke pouring from the turbines.
From the shadow of the rooftop doorway, Julian walked out into the cold rain, flanked by Eleanor and Marcus.
"You always were careless with maintenance schedules, Arthur," Julian said, his voice easily carrying over the whipping wind. "I bought the aviation company that services your helicopter six hours ago. That chopper isn't going anywhere."
Arthur backed away until his heels hit the low perimeter wall of the sky-scraper roof. Fifty stories below, the lights of Manhattan burned bright in the storm.
"You ruined me!" Arthur screamed, his voice wild and insane with desperate rage. "I built an empire for you, Julian! Everything I did was to give you the world!"
"You didn't do it for me," Julian replied calmly, stepping closer while federal agents closed the perimeter around the trapped titan. "You did it for your own ego. You destroyed my mother’s life. You tried to destroy Eleanor’s life. You tried to steal my son’s future."
Eleanor stepped up beside Julian, holding a waterproof folder containing the Swiss police reports and the seizure notices for every asset bearing the Vance Holdings name.
"Your bank accounts are frozen, Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice clear and strong against the whistling rain. "Your board of directors voted unanimously an hour ago to remove you as Chairman. Vance Holdings is gone. It’s being folded into our family foundation."
Arthur looked at his son, then at Eleanor, seeing the absolute, indestructible unity between them—a bond forged through hardship, fire, and unconditional love. He realized, with absolute clarity, that he was utterly, completely defeated.

The federal agents moved in, forcing Arthur to his knees and snapping heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists.
As they dragged the weeping, broken old man toward the roof exit, Julian didn't watch him leave. He turned his back on his father, wrapped his coat around Eleanor’s shoulders, and walked toward the warmth of the interior doors.
