Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Court

The following Monday, the Federal Courthouse in downtown Providence was surrounded by a wall of television news vans and hundreds of shouting reporters.
It was the day of the emergency hearing regarding the corporate dissolution of Dawson Global. Howard Dawson had launched one final, desperate legal missile: he was suing Julian Vance for corporate sabotage and filing for emergency custody rights over Jude, claiming Eleanor was mentally unfit and being held against her will under duress by Vance Capital.
Inside the grand, oak-paneled courtroom, the air was thick with tension.
Howard sat at the plaintiff’s table, looking gaunt and manic, flanked by three high-priced corporate litigation lawyers he could no longer afford to pay. On the other side sat Julian and Eleanor, surrounded by a world-class legal team led by Elizabeth Sterling, the most feared appellate attorney in the country.
Judge Thomas Vance—unrelated to Julian, but famously fair and ruthless toward frivolous lawsuits—hammered his gavel down with a deafening CRACK.
"We are here in the matter of Dawson v. Vance," Judge Thomas announced, adjusting his reading glasses. "Mr. Dawson, your council has submitted a ninety-page brief claiming tortious interference, extortion, and requesting an immediate wellness check and temporary guardianship over the infant, Jude Vance. This is a extraordinary filing. You have five minutes to explain why I shouldn't throw you out of my courtroom immediately."
Howard sprang to his feet, ignoring his lead attorney’s subtle attempt to pull him back down.
"Your Honor!" Howard shouted, his voice echoing off the high plaster ceilings. "Julian Vance has used his financial muscle to orchestrate a predatory takeover of my life’s work! He manipulated my daughter while she was in a vulnerable state, hid her away in Maine for six months, and is now holding her hostage in his Newport estate! She is suffering from severe postpartum depression and is incapable of making decisions for herself or her child!"
The courtroom gasped. Several reporters in the gallery began scribbling furiously on their pads.
Eleanor remained calm, her hands rested folded on the polished oak table. She felt Julian’s hand slide under the wood, his fingers lacing tightly through hers, offering steady, unspoken strength.
"Are you finished, Mr. Dawson?" Judge Thomas asked coldly.
"No, Your Honor! I demand an immediate psychological evaluation of my daughter, and an injunction freezing all transfer of Dawson Global assets to Vance Capital!"
Judge Thomas looked over his glasses toward Elizabeth Sterling. "Defense counsel. Care to respond?"
Elizabeth stood up with fluid, effortless grace. She smoothed the front of her dark suit and picked up a single silver flash drive from the table.
"Your Honor, we do not need five minutes," Elizabeth said smoothly. "We need thirty seconds. We submit into evidence Exhibit A: an unedited audio and video recording taken inside Room 412 of Harbor Crest Medical Center on November 14th, less than thirty minutes after Eleanor Dawson gave birth."
Howard’s face drained of color. He slammed his hands on the table. "Objection! That was recorded without consent!"
"Rhode Island is a one-party consent state, Mr. Dawson," Judge Thomas growled. "Overruled. Play the file."
The courtroom lights dimmed slightly as a large flat-screen monitor mounted on the wall flickered to life.
The crisp, unmistakable audio filled the room. Howard’s own voice boomed through the high-definition speakers:
"A grandson who will bring nothing but scandal to the Dawson name... A formal renunciation of your shares in Dawson Global... If you refuse, we freeze your accounts immediately. You will have nothing, Eleanor. No money, no support, and absolutely no future for that fatherless child."
The silence that followed the recording was suffocating. Several journalists in the back row actually gasped in disgust.
Judge Thomas slowly took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. He looked down at Howard with absolute, utter contempt.
"Mr. Dawson," Judge Thomas said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. "In my thirty years on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed a display of parental cruelty as calculated, callous, and financially predatory as the one I just heard."
Howard stumbled over his words. "Your Honor... that was taken out of context—"
"Silence!" Judge Thomas roared, slamming his gavel down so hard the sound echoed like a gunshot. "Your petition for emergency guardianship is denied with prejudice! Your motion for an injunction is denied! Furthermore, based on the evidence presented today regarding your attempts to coerce an incapacitated patient in a hospital, I am referring this matter to the Rhode Island State Attorney General for immediate criminal investigation regarding extortion and fraud!"

Howard sank back into his leather chair, looking as if he had been struck by lightning.
Julian leaned over to Eleanor, his breath warm against her ear. "It’s over, Ellie. He can never touch us again."
