Chapter 2 - The Hospital Room and The Truth Unveiled

The emergency room at St. Jude’s was a blur of fluorescent lights, cold stainless steel, and urgent medical hushed tones. I was immediately rushed into a private ultrasound suite. Luke held my hand so tightly his knuckles turned white, his eyes never leaving mine.

"Please, God, please let the baby be okay," I prayed silently over and over, my eyes glued to the dark monitor screen beside the bed.

The doctor, a stern yet kind female obstetrician named Dr. Aris, moved the transducer probe across my stomach. The cooling gel felt ice-cold against my bruised skin. For three excruciatingly long minutes, no one spoke. The sound of my own ragged breathing filled the room.

Then, a rapid, rhythmic, unmistakable sound burst through the speaker: thump-thump-thump-thump-thump.

"There it is," Dr. Aris said, breaking into a warm, gentle smile. "Strong heartbeat. 155 beats per minute. Your baby is a fighter, Danielle. There is a small subchorionic hematoma—a bruise near the placenta from the trauma—so you will need strict bed rest for the next few weeks. But the fetus is alive and safe."

Luke let out a ragged sob, burying his face in the bend of my neck, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably. "Thank God," he whispered. "Thank God."

An hour later, after I was moved to a comfortable private recovery room, the door opened softly. Courtney stepped in, followed by Zachary and Arthur Sterling. Courtney looked completely broken. Her makeup was ruined, her eyes swollen, and her hands were trembling violently.

"Danielle..." Courtney choked out, stepping up to my bedside. She took my non-IV hand and pressed it against her cheek. "I am so, so sorry. I didn't know. I swear on my life I had no idea Mom was capable of... of that."

"I know, Court," I whispered, squeezing her fingers back. "I know it wasn't you."

"She's arrested," Zachary said grimly, standing beside Courtney. "The police came to the house. Arthur had brought a squad car with him. Evelyn was taken out in handcuffs. Dad... Dad is sitting at the police station right now being questioned as an accessory."

I looked over at Arthur Sterling, who was standing quietly by the window, his briefcase held firmly in his hand.

"Mr. Sterling," I began, my voice raspy. "What did you mean back at the house? Biological grandmother? Stealing?"

Arthur pulled up a chair and sat down beside my bed, placing his silver folder on the bedside table.

"Danielle," Arthur began gently. "The woman you called your mother, Evelyn, is not your biological mother. And Richard is not your biological father."

I froze. The world seemed to stop spinning. "What?"

"Thirty years ago," Arthur explained, "Evelyn's sister, Victoria Vance's younger daughter, Eleanor Vance, gave birth to a child out of wedlock. Eleanor was an exceptionally talented pianist and the sole heir to the Vance family trust—a multi-million-dollar fortune built on real estate and shipping."

Arthur opened the folder, revealing yellowed documents and birth certificates.

"Eleanor passed away due to severe complications shortly after giving birth to you, Danielle," Arthur continued, his eyes full of sorrow. "Before she died, she named her daughter as the sole beneficiary of her trust fund. However, Evelyn and Richard were broke. They had lost everything in bad real estate investments. Evelyn manipulated the legal documents, faked an adoption record, and raised you as her own daughter—not out of love, but to control the Vance trust fund until you turned thirty years old."

"My whole life..." I whispered, tears spilling over my eyelashes. "My whole life she hated me... because I wasn't really hers?"

"She hated you because you represented the sister she was always jealous of," Arthur corrected gently. "And because the moment you turn thirty—which is in six months—the entire Vance estate, worth over eighty million dollars, transfers entirely to your name. Evelyn knew that if you had a child, or if you got married and built your own family, you would start investigating your inheritance and push her out of the trust control completely."
