Chapter 5 - The War Begins

Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital under strict medical orders to remain on bed rest for at least four weeks. Luke brought me home to our cozy two-bedroom cottage on the outskirts of the city—a humble house we had bought with our own hard-earned savings, entirely free from my family's shadow.

While I rested, Arthur Sterling worked tirelessly. The revelation of my true parentage sent shockwaves through the local community and legal circles.

Evelyn Vance was held without bail due to the violence of the crime and the flight risk posed by her vast access to illegal offshore assets that Arthur had uncovered. Richard, however, managed to scrape together bail money by mortgaging a property Arthur hadn't managed to freeze yet.

It wasn't long before Richard tried to strike back.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Luke was out grabbing prescriptions and groceries. Courtney was sitting in the living room with me, helping me fold baby clothes that Luke had bought to lift my spirits.

Suddenly, heavy pounding rattled our front door.

"Danielle! Courtney! Open this door right now!" Richard’s voice roared from outside.

Courtney immediately stood up, her face darkening. "Stay here, Danielle. Do not move."

"Courtney, be careful!" I called out, reaching for my phone on the nightstand to dial Luke and the police.

Courtney marched to the front door and pulled it open, leaving the safety chain attached. Richard stood on the porch, drenched in rain, his hair messy, looking entirely unhinged. The suave, calm man who carved the Sunday roast was completely gone.

"Courtney!" Richard yelled through the crack of the door. "Thank God you're here. You need to fire that lawyer Arthur Sterling! He’s trying to bankrupt us! Your mother is sitting in a remand center cell with common criminals! You need to talk to Danielle and force her to drop the charges!"

"Are you insane, Dad?!" Courtney shouted back through the door. "Mom attacked her! She tried to kill Danielle's baby!"

"It was an accident! She was distraught over your failed IVF!" Richard lied shamelessly. "We did everything for you, Courtney! Every penny we took from Eleanor's fund was spent on making your life perfect! We bought you your first car, your Ivy League tuition, your dream wedding! You owe us!"

"I owe you?!" Courtney laughed hysterically, tears mixing with the rain blowing in through the crack. "You turned me into an accomplice to a crime without my knowledge! You made me live a life built on stolen money from my own sister! You sick, greedy monsters!"

"Listen to me, you ungrateful girl!" Richard slammed his palm against the door. "If your mother goes to prison, the family name is ruined! Zachary’s firm will drop him! You’ll be left with nothing!"

"I’d rather have nothing than be anything like you!" Courtney snapped.

At that moment, a sleek white sedan pulled into our driveway. Luke jumped out, carrying a bag of groceries, followed closely by two police cruisers that had responded to my silent emergency call.

"Get away from my house!" Luke yelled, sprinting across the lawn and putting himself directly between Richard and the front door.

Richard spun around, pointing a finger at Luke. "You! This is all your fault! You pushed her to reveal the pregnancy! If you had just kept your mouth shut—"

"If he had kept his mouth shut, you would have kept stealing from my sister for the rest of her life!" Courtney yelled, unlatching the chain and stepping onto the porch beside Luke.

The two police officers stepped up onto the porch, grabbing Richard by his arms.

"Richard Vance?" the officer declared. "You are violating the temporary restraining order filed by Danielle Miller. You are under arrest."

As the police cuffed Richard and shoved him into the back of the patrol car, Richard looked back at us, his eyes filled with absolute hatred. "You'll regret this, Danielle! Eleanor was a weak fool, and so are you!"
