Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

With Richard back in custody for violating the restraining order and attempting to intimidate witnesses, a quiet calm finally fell over our lives, allowing me to focus on my healing.

As the weeks passed, my body slowly recovered. The doctor confirmed during my follow-up appointment that the subchorionic hematoma had fully dissolved. My baby was growing healthy and strong.

One afternoon, Arthur Sterling visited our cottage bringing several large, dusty leather-bound boxes.

"What are these, Arthur?" I asked, sitting up on the couch while Luke brought out tea.

"These," Arthur said gently, placing a box on the coffee table, "belonged to your biological mother, Eleanor Vance. When Evelyn locked down Eleanor’s estate thirty years ago, I managed to hide her personal belongings in a private secure vault. I kept them safe until you were ready."

My breath caught in my throat. I reached out with trembling hands and opened the lid of the top box.

Inside were old photo albums, handwritten journals, sheet music scored by hand, and a small velvet jewelry box. I picked up a photograph. Looking back at me was a young woman with warm, expressive dark eyes, a radiant smile, and soft wavy hair—she looked almost identical to me.

"She was beautiful," Luke whispered, leaning in beside me.

"She was an extraordinary woman, Danielle," Arthur recalled with a nostalgic smile. "Eleanor was kind, brilliant, and deeply passionate about music. When she found out she was pregnant with you, she was overjoyed. She didn't care about the societal judgment of being a single mother back then. She spent months composing a lullaby specifically for you."

I opened the handwritten sheet music. At the top of the page, written in elegant cursive script, were the words: Lullaby for my little Danielle.

Tears filled my eyes, dripping onto the yellowed paper. All my life, Evelyn had made me feel like an unwanted accident, a mistake that spoiled her perfect family picture. But holding these papers, I realized the truth: I was deeply, passionately loved before I was even born.

"Why didn't Eleanor marry my father?" I asked softly. "Who was he?"

Arthur’s expression softened with a touch of sadness. "Your biological father was a talented cellist named Julian Vance—he shared the same surname by sheer coincidence. He passed away in a tragic automobile accident just two months before you were born. Eleanor was heartbroken, but she vowed to give you the world. When she died of postpartum complications, she believed her sister Evelyn would love you like a daughter."

"Evelyn didn't want a daughter," I said quietly. "She wanted a wallet."

"Yes," Arthur agreed grimly. "But now, justice is coming. The grand jury has formally indicted both Evelyn and Richard on twenty-four felony counts, including attempt to commit severe bodily injury to an unborn child, grand theft, identity fraud, and money laundering. Their trial date has been set."
