Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in Custody

Two days later, accompanied by Luke and Arthur Sterling, I walked into the visitation room of the county detention facility.

The room was cold, lit by harsh fluorescent bulbs, with a thick plexiglass partition separating two sides. I sat down on the metal chair and waited.

A moment later, the heavy metal door on the other side opened.

Evelyn walked in, wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit. Her hair, which had always been meticulously styled in blonde highlights, was now dull and graying at the roots. She had no makeup on, revealing deep wrinkles and hollow, dark circles under her eyes. She looked thirty years older.

She sat down heavily on the stool and picked up the telephone receiver. I picked up mine.

"You look well, Danielle," Evelyn said, her voice raspy and stripped of its usual haughty edge.

"I am well, Evelyn," I replied coldly, refusing to call her 'Mom'. "My baby is safe, healthy, and growing. No thanks to you."

Evelyn flinched slightly, her eyes flickering with a faint trace of bitter resentment before fading into hollow exhaustion.

"Why did you come?" she asked.

"Because Arthur said you wanted to confess something," I said. "What could you possibly have left to say?"

Evelyn let out a dry, bitter laugh. "I wanted to see if you would turn out like Eleanor. Always so righteous. Always so perfect. Do you know how sickening it was to live in her shadow? My father loved her more. My mother loved her more. And then, even after she died, she left behind a fortune while Richard and I were bankrupt!"

"So you stole from her baby," I said, my voice rising with controlled anger. "You took an orphaned infant, raised her to feel worthless, and stole millions from her!"

"I earned that money!" Evelyn suddenly slammed her fist against the counter, causing Luke to step forward protectively behind me. "I raised you! I clothed you! I fed you!"

"You didn't raise me," I snapped back, leaning closer to the glass. "You kept me as a hostage! You were terrified that the second I realized who I was, your fake luxury life would evaporate. That's why you hated me. That's why you tried to destroy my baby—because my baby represented a future you couldn't control!"

Evelyn stared at me, her chest heaving. The realization that her psychological grip over me was entirely shattered finally seemed to hit her. I was no longer the timid, soft-spoken girl who hid behind her sister at dinner. I was a mother, protecting my own.

"I don't need your confession, Evelyn," I said smoothly, preparing to hang up the phone. "The evidence Arthur has is overwhelming. You are going to spend the rest of your life in a federal prison. And you will never, ever see my child."

"Wait!" Evelyn cried out, her hands pressing against the glass. "Danielle, wait! The letter!"

I paused, holding the receiver to my ear. "What letter?"

May you like

"In Eleanor's piano," Evelyn whispered, tears finally leaking down her wrinkled cheeks. "In the grand piano that we sold to the city museum... there’s a secret compartment in the soundboard. Eleanor hid a letter there for you before she went into the hospital. I tried to destroy it, but the museum picked up the piano before I could get it out."

I stared at her for a long moment, verifying the truth in her desperation. Then I slowly placed the receiver back on the hook, stood up, and walked out of the room with Luke, leaving Evelyn crying alone behind the glass.
