Chapter 3 - Web of Deceit

The revelation shattered everything I had ever believed about my childhood.

All those years of playing second fiddle to Courtney—all those times I was made to feel like an unwanted burden, forced to sit in the shadow of Courtney’s perfection—it was all a calculated psychological campaign. Evelyn had intentionally belittled me to destroy my self-esteem so I would never question my place in the family or look into my financial affairs.

Courtney sat on the edge of my bed, staring at Arthur in utter horror. "Wait... if Danielle is Eleanor's daughter... then what about me?"

Arthur looked at Courtney with a soft, empathetic gaze. "You, Courtney, are Evelyn and Richard's biological daughter. Evelyn adored you because you were hers. But she also used you. She poured every cent of Danielle's stolen trust money into your education, your lavish lifestyle, and recently... your expensive IVF treatments."

Courtney covered her mouth, a stifled cry escaping her lips. "No... no, oh God, no. The IVF... the treatments were paid for with... with Danielle's money?"

"Over three hundred thousand dollars of Danielle's money," Arthur confirmed quietly. "Evelyn was desperately trying to make Courtney produce the 'first grandchild' so she could attempt to divert a secondary legacy fund created by old Victoria Vance for the great-grandchildren. Evelyn’s goal was to ensure Courtney’s child got the inheritance before Danielle ever found out about her heritage."

"I feel sick," Courtney cried, sinking her head into Zachary's chest. "I didn't know, Danielle. I swear to God I didn't know!"

"I know you didn't, Courtney," I said, reaching out to hug my sister. Despite everything, Courtney had never been cruel to me. She was a victim of our mother's toxic, puppet-master control just as much as I was, albeit in a vastly different way. She had been raised to be a trophy; I had been raised to be an invisible cash cow.

Luke stepped forward, placing a protecting hand on my shoulder. "Mr. Sterling, what happens now legally?"

Arthur closed the folder. "Evelyn faces severe criminal charges: felony assault on a pregnant woman, child endangerment, and decades of fraud and embezzlement. Richard is facing charges of conspiracy and tax evasion. I have already frozen all bank accounts tied to the Vance trust. Evelyn and Richard no longer have access to a single penny."

"What about their house?" I asked.

"The house," Arthur smiled faintly, "was bought entirely with Vance trust capital. Technically, Danielle... that house belongs to you."

Just then, the door to the hospital room rattled open. A police detective stepped in, accompanied by an attorney wearing an expensive, tailored suit.

"Danielle Vance-Miller?" the detective asked politely. "I am Detective Harrison. We need to take your official statement regarding the assault by Evelyn Vance. And this gentleman here... claims to be representing your father, Richard Vance."

The attorney stepped forward, adjusting his tie with an arrogant posture. "Mrs. Miller, I am Richard’s legal counsel. My client wishes to offer a private settlement. If you drop the criminal assault charges against your mother and agree not to press charges against your father, they will walk away quietly and sign over their claim on the estate without a legal battle."

Luke stood up, his tall frame blocking the attorney from getting any closer to my bed. His voice was icy cold:

"Get the hell out of this room before I throw you out myself."
