Chapter 10 - THE EVERLASTING HOME

Autumn returned to Colorado, painting the mountain trees in brilliant shades of gold, crimson, and amber.
It was Thanksgiving Day.
The large dining room of our craftsman home was alive with light, warmth, and the delicious smells of roasted turkey, fresh pumpkin pie, and warm apple cider.
The long oak dining table was set with rustic ceramic plates, linen napkins, and hand-painted place cards made by Chloe and Lily.
Sitting around the table were Carter, Mason, Chloe, Sam, Lily, Sarah Jenkins, and several neighbors who had supported us throughout our journey.
I stood at the head of the table, holding a small silver bell. I tapped it gently, bringing the room to a happy, expectant hush.
"Alright, everyone," I smiled, looking around at the radiant faces of the five children who had become my absolute heart and soul. "Before we eat, we have our tradition. Who wants to go first?"
Ten-year-old Sam raised his hand wildly. "Me! I’m thankful for my new mountain bike!"
Everyone laughed.
Eight-year-old Chloe went next. "I’m thankful for my dance teacher and my art room!"
Mason smiled, adjusting his glasses. "I’m thankful that my short film got accepted into the regional festival."
Little five-year-old Lily giggled, holding up her stuffed rabbit. "I’m thankful for pumpkin pie!"
Finally, fifteen-year-old Carter stood up from his chair. He was tall now, his shoulders broad, his eyes clear and filled with a profound, mature confidence.
He looked around the table, then turned his gaze directly to me.
"I’m thankful for the rest stop," Carter said, his voice strong, clear, and ringing with absolute truth.
The room went quiet, everyone listening intently.
"Two years ago," Carter continued, holding my eyes with deep affection, "I thought that rest stop was the end of our lives. I thought we were discarded. But now I know it was just the place where our real life began. I’m thankful for Aunt Megan—our mom—who was brave enough to stand up when everyone else stayed silent. She showed us that real love doesn't leave you behind."
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy traced a quiet path down my cheeks.
I walked over to Carter, pulling him into a warm, tight embrace, as the other four children jumped out of their chairs, wrapping their arms around us in a giant, joyous family hug.
