Chapter 3 - THE HAWAIIAN ARREST

Five thousand miles away, the sun was shining brightly over Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu.
Ashley Vance stretched her arms, adjusting her oversized designer sunglasses as she walked down the jet bridge. She took a deep breath of the tropical air, turning to her husband, Greg, who was carrying their leather carry-on bags.
"God, this feels amazing," Ashley laughed, checking her reflection in her phone screen. "No screaming kids, no making lunches, no chaos. Just six days of pure peace."
"Did you check your phone?" Greg asked, turning off his airplane mode. "Did Megan text you?"
Ashley scoffed, opening her email app. "She’s probably throwing a minor fit, but she’ll get over it. She loves the kids. Besides, Mom said she’d handle Megan if she got dramatically upset. Megan is way too timid to cause real trouble."
Her phone suddenly vibrated violently.
It wasn't a text message from me.
It was a flood of ninety-four missed calls, thirty-eight voicemails, and dozens of emergency alerts from my mother, Greg's parents, and the local sheriff's department.
Ashley’s smile faded. "What the hell...?"
Before Greg could reply, four uniformed Honolulu Police officers and two airport security agents stepped out from behind the gate counter, walking directly toward them.
"Ashley Vance? Gregory Vance?" the lead officer asked sternly.
Ashley crossed her arms, putting on her typical entitled persona. "Yes? Is there a problem? We just landed on vacation—"
"Sir, ma'am, place your hands behind your backs," the officer ordered, pulling out two pairs of steel handcuffs.
Greg backed away, his face turning pale. "Woah! Hey! What are you doing?! We didn't do anything!"
"You are being placed under arrest pursuant to a felony warrant issued by the State of Colorado for multi-count child abandonment, severe child endangerment, and conspiracy to commit child neglect," the officer announced loudly.
The entire terminal came to a standstill. Tourists pulled out their phones, recording video as the officers forced Ashley’s arms behind her back.
"This is a mistake!" Ashley shrieked, her sunglasses falling off her face onto the carpet. "My sister is watching our children! We left them with their aunt!"
"You left five minors at a public rest stop on a state highway without adult supervision or consent, ma'am," the officer replied coldly, clicking the steel cuffs tightly around her wrists. "Your sister called emergency services when she found them alone on the street."

"Megan..." Ashley gasped, the color completely draining from her face as the cold reality crashed down upon her. "She... she called the cops on me?!"
"You have the right to remain silent," the officer read as they marched Ashley and Greg down the terminal in full view of hundreds of vacationing families, their Mai Tai dreams turning into an absolute legal nightmare.
