Chapter 9 - A NEW FOUNDATION

A year passed.
The criminal trial concluded with Ashley receiving a seven-year state prison sentence for felony child abandonment and criminal endangerment. Greg, who agreed to cooperate with prosecutors late in the trial, received a four-year sentence.
My mother, stripped of her influence and isolated from her grandchildren, moved away to Florida, living out her years in bitter, quiet loneliness—a fitting consequence for a woman who valued toxic pride over the safety of innocent children.
Meanwhile, our home in Colorado flourished.
Carter joined the middle school track team, becoming a confident, bright young man who loved building model airplanes. Mason pursued his passion for digital video production, winning first place in a statewide youth media competition. Chloe took ballet lessons, Sam learned how to ride a two-wheeled bicycle, and little Lily started kindergarten, always wearing a bright pink backpack and carrying her stuffed rabbit.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, we held a backyard barbecue to celebrate the final, official signing of the Permanent Adoption Decree.
Standing in the yard were our closest friends, Sarah Jenkins (who had become a dear family friend), and the local sheriff's deputies who had responded to the rest stop call two years ago.
I stood on the back deck, holding a glass of lemonade, watching the kids run through the lawn sprinklers, their joyous laughter echoing through the warm summer air.
Sarah walked up beside me, leaning against the wooden railing.
"Look at them, Megan," Sarah smiled warmly. "Remember the terrified kids sitting on the curb by the vending machine?"
I looked at Carter, who was helping Sam fly a kite near the pine trees, smiling broadly under the sun.

"I remember," I said softly, tears of happiness welling up in my eyes. "Calling CPS that day was the most terrifying decision of my life. I thought I was ruining a family."
"You didn't ruin a family, Megan," Sarah said, placing a warm hand on my shoulder. "You saved five children from a lifetime of abuse. You built a real family out of the ashes."
