Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING IN COURT

The preliminary hearing at the Denver County Courthouse was packed with press, legal representatives, and social workers.
Ashley and Greg sat at the defense table with their high-priced criminal defense attorney, Arthur Vance (no relation to Greg). Ashley looked confident, sitting with her back straight, believing her media interview had swayed public sympathy. My mother sat directly behind her in the front row of the gallery, glaring at me whenever I looked back.
I sat beside the District Attorney, ADA Amanda Vance, holding a folder containing Mason's digital recording.
The judge, the Honorable Evelyn Thorne, tapped her gavel to bring the court to order.
"We are here today to determine trial status and parental rights regarding the minors Carter, Mason, Chloe, Sam, and Lily Vance," Judge Thorne announced sternly.
Ashley’s attorney stood up, adjusting his suit jacket. "Your Honor, my clients have suffered an unprecedented public character assassination. As Mrs. Vance stated in her public broadcast, this entire incident was a tragic miscommunication between sisters. Mrs. Vance suffered a severe stress-induced lapse in judgment, believing her sister Megan had agreed to care for the children."
"Is that so, counsel?" Judge Thorne asked, raising an eyebrow.
ADA Amanda Vance stood up calmly. "Your Honor, the State wishes to submit Exhibit D into evidence. It is a forensically verified audio-visual recording taken forty-eight hours prior to the abandonment."
Ashley’s lawyer frowned. "What recording?"
The prosecution plugged a USB drive into the courtroom media monitor.
Ashley’s kitchen appeared on the big screens surrounding the courtroom. The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence as Ashley’s clear, mocking voice filled the speakers:
"We’ll just drop the kids off at the I-70 rest stop ten minutes before her arrival time, send her an email when we’re in the security line at the airport, and turn our phones off. She’s too weak to leave them there. She’ll have no choice..."
In the gallery, several social workers let out horrified gasps.
Ashley’s face went ghost-white. She spun around in her seat, staring at Mason, who was sitting quietly in the back row with a court advocate.
"You..." Ashley gasped, her lips trembling in pure terror. "You recorded me?!"
"Silence in the court!" Judge Thorne slammed her gavel down with a sharp CRACK.
Greg buried his face in his hands, letting out a pathetic groan. Ashley’s lawyer slumped back into his chair, realizing his defense strategy had just been utterly incinerated.
Judge Thorne looked down at Ashley and Greg, her eyes filled with supreme, icy contempt.
"Mrs. Vance, Mr. Vance," Judge Thorne spoke, her voice echoing through the grand courtroom. "Your actions were not a 'lapse in judgment.' They were a cold, calculated, and malicious act of abandonment inflicted upon five innocent children. You utilized emotional coercion, deception, and endangerment to facilitate a vacation."
"Your Honor, please!" Ashley sobbed, finally shedding real tears of panic. "I am their mother!"
"A title you have thoroughly disgraced," Judge Thorne replied mercilessly. "Effective immediately, the bail for both defendants is REVOKED. You will be taken into custody pending your criminal trial."
"No! Mom! Help me!" Ashley shrieked as two county sheriffs stepped forward, pulling her arms behind her back and clicking steel handcuffs around her wrists.
My mother jumped up from the gallery bench. "You can't do this! This is a family matter!"
"Remove that woman from my courtroom!" Judge Thorne ordered, pointing at Eleanor.
Two deputies escorted my screaming, hysterical mother out the double doors as Ashley and Greg were dragged away to the holding cells.
Judge Thorne then turned her eyes to me. Her expression softened completely.

"Miss Megan Rose," the judge said gently. "The court recognizes your extraordinary courage and devotion to these children. Emergency temporary guardianship is hereby converted to Full Legal Foster Custody pending permanent adoption proceedings."
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath, feeling the crushing weight of anxiety finally lift off my chest.
