Chapter 6 - THE EXPOSURE

Six weeks after the incident at the rest stop, Ashley and Greg were released on a heavy $250,000 bail under strict conditions: zero contact with all five children, ankle monitor tracking, and surrender of their passports.

Instead of keeping a low profile and demonstrating remorse, Ashley did what she always did when faced with consequences—she attempted to control the public narrative.

She booked an interview with a prominent local morning news show, framing herself as a "stressed, overworked mother who suffered a temporary mental breakdown due to lack of family support."

I was sitting in my living room with Sarah Jenkins when the interview aired live on television.

On the screen, Ashley sat beside Greg, wearing a modest, dark dress, dabbing fake tears from her eyes with a tissue.

"I just reached my breaking point," Ashley wept to the interviewer. "Raising five children in today's economy is exhausting. I reached out to my sister, Megan, weeks in advance, begging for help. She promised she would meet us at the rest stop to take the kids for the weekend. But when she arrived, she panicked, had a change of heart, and called CPS out of spite to ruin my marriage."

I stared at the television screen, my jaw clenched.

Beside me, Sarah Jenkins pulled out her tablet, her face thunderous. "She just committed public defamation and violated her pre-trial publicity restrictions."

"She’s lying," a small voice said from the doorway.

It was Mason, my eleven-year-old nephew. He was holding his iPad.

"Mason, sweetie, go back to the playroom," I said gently, reaching for the remote to turn off the TV.

"No, Aunt Megan," Mason said, walking into the room. "Mom is lying. She never talked to you. I have the video."

I froze. "What video?"

Mason held out his iPad. "Two days before we drove to the rest stop, Mom and Dad were in the kitchen talking. I was making a TikTok video in the hallway. I recorded them."

Sarah and I leaned in as Mason pressed play on the screen.

The video showed the interior of Ashley’s kitchen from two days before the trip. Ashley’s voice was crystal clear:

"Greg, if we tell Megan beforehand, she’ll say no or demand we pay for her gas. We’ll just drop the kids off at the I-70 rest stop ten minutes before her arrival time, send her an email when we’re in the security line at the airport, and turn our phones off. She’s too weak to leave them there. She’ll have no choice but to take them to the cabin."

Greg’s voice replied with a laugh: "What if she gets mad?"

Ashley scoffed: "Who cares? She’s single and has nothing better to do. Mom will force her to stay quiet anyway."

Sarah Jenkins gasped, looking at Mason in absolute shock. "Mason... this is direct, ironclad evidence of premeditated abandonment and conspiracy."

I looked at my young nephew, reaching out to touch his face. "Mason... are you okay with us showing this to the prosecutor?"

Mason nodded firmly, his eyes clear and resolute. "She left us on the curb, Aunt Megan. She doesn't care about us. You do."
