Chapter 4 - The Lies Unravel

The next forty-eight hours were a living nightmare. Leo remained in a medically induced coma to allow his heart and nervous system to recover from the toxic shock. I didn't leave his bedside once, surviving on cold hospital coffee and the support of my sister, Clara, who flew in as soon as she heard the news.
Meanwhile, the local news picked up the story: Local Doctor’s Wife Arrested After Pediatric Overdose at Public Park.
Brenda had been released on bail, paid for by Richard’s legal team. But instead of laying low, Brenda’s wealthy mother, Evelyn, decided to start a smear campaign against me. Statements began appearing on local community forums and social media, claiming that I was an unfit, negligent mother, that Leo had severe behavioral issues, and that Brenda was merely an innocent aunt trying to save a chaotic situation.
On Tuesday morning, Detective Garcia visited me at the hospital.
“Mrs. Miller, we need to show you something,” Garcia said, opening a manila folder on the bedside table. “We interviewed eight-year-old Maya with a child psychologist present. Her testimony completely contradicts what Brenda and Richard told us.”
My heart skipped a beat. “What did Maya say?”
“Maya told us that Brenda planned this before she even picked Leo up from your house,” Garcia said gravely. “Brenda had crushed the medication into a juice box at home. She explicitly told Maya, ‘We’re going to teach your aunt a lesson today about how bad her son really is.’ Maya saw her mother force Leo to drink it when he complained it tasted bitter.”
I covered my mouth, tears spilling over my cheeks. “It was premeditated?”
“It gets worse,” Garcia continued. “We audited Dr. Richard Miller’s prescription records for the past six months. We found multiple unauthorized prescriptions written under fictitious names, but filled at the same pharmacy where Brenda picked up the Clonidine. It appears Dr. Miller has been illegally writing scripts to manage family issues and stress—and Brenda had unrestricted access to controlled substances.”

Suddenly, the door opened, and a woman in a sharp navy blazer walked in. It was Eleanor Vance, one of the top child protection and family trial attorneys in the state.
“Mrs. Miller,” Eleanor said, extending her hand warmly. “Your sister Clara retained me. We aren't just going to defend you against Brenda’s smear campaign. We are going to ensure that Brenda and Richard face the full severity of the law.”
