Chapter 10 - Healing and New Beginnings

With the trial over and the perpetrators behind bars, the heavy dark cloud that had hovered over our family finally began to lift.

However, there was still one major issue remaining: eight-year-old Maya. With her mother in prison and her father heading to federal custody, Maya was facing placement in state foster care. Evelyn had applied for custody, but the court deemed her environment unsuitable due to her enabling role in the family’s toxic behavior.

I met with Eleanor and a social worker at my home.

“Sarah,” Eleanor said, “Maya specifically asked if she could live with you and Leo. She feels safe around you.”

I looked over at the living room. Leo and Maya were sitting on the rug, building a massive Lego castle together. Leo was smiling, his energy and bright laughter fully returned, while Maya looked happier and more relaxed than I had ever seen her.

“I want to take her,” I said without hesitation. “She saved my son’s life that day in the park. If she hadn't called me on her smartwatch, Leo wouldn't be here today.”

With the court’s swift approval, I was granted full legal guardianship of Maya.
