Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

The grand jury hearing was set for three weeks later. Eleanor, my attorney, worked round the clock to build an airtight case.

One evening, Eleanor called me into her downtown office. The tables were covered with medical logs, phone records, and bank statements.

“Sarah, we found the smoking gun,” Eleanor said, pushing a file toward me. “We subpoenaed Brenda’s personal text messages from the morning of the incident.”

I read the printouts of the text thread between Brenda and a close friend from her country club:

Brenda: I can’t stand Sarah’s little brat anymore. He’s ruined every holiday gathering with his noise. Friend: What are you going to do about it? Brenda: I’m taking him today. I got some of Richard’s heavy drops. I’ll give him enough to knock him out for hours, then drop him off at Sarah’s so she thinks her kid has a neurological condition. That’ll shut her up about her perfect parenting.

My blood ran cold. The sheer wickedness of her plan was breathtaking. She didn't just want to quiet Leo down for an afternoon—she wanted to inflict psychological torture on me, making me believe my child was suffering from a debilitating illness.

“This proves intent,” Eleanor said firmly. “This escalates the charges from reckless endangerment to felony assault, child endangerment, and attempted poisoning. Brenda isn't getting probation. She’s looking at significant prison time.”

“What about Richard?” I asked.

“Richard’s situation is even worse,” Eleanor replied. “The DEA and the state medical board launched a joint raid on his clinic yesterday morning. They discovered he’s been falsifying patient charts to cover up missing doses of pediatric sedatives and pain medication. He’s being charged with medical fraud, forgery, and illegal distribution of narcotics.”

I leaned back in my chair, feeling a strange mix of shock and justice. The illusion of the wealthy, respectable Miller family was completely crumbling.
