Chapter 9 - The Verdict

After four days of intense testimony, the jury retired to deliberate.

The wait was agonising. Leo was back home, resting safely under Clara’s care, but I stayed at the courthouse, walking the marble hallways until my feet ached.

After six hours, the jury signaled that they had reached a verdict.

The courtroom was dead silent as Judge Henderson took her seat. Brenda stood beside her attorneys, her hands shaking uncontrollably.

“On count one, Attempted Child Endangerment with Intent to Cause Severe Harm, how do you find?” the judge asked.

“Guilty,” the jury foreman announced.

A sharp gasp ripped through the defense side of the room. Evelyn buried her face in her hands.

“On count two, Felony Assault of a Minor... Guilty.” “On count three, Tampering with Evidence... Guilty.”

Brenda collapsed into her chair, sobbing hysterically as the guilty verdicts were read one after another.

Judge Henderson banged her gavel. “The defendant will be remanded into custody immediately without bail pending sentencing.”

Two sheriff’s deputies stepped forward, pulling Brenda’s hands behind her back and snapping heavy iron cuffs over her wrists. As she was led away through the side door, she looked at me, her eyes wild with panic.

“Sarah, please! Talk to them!” she shrieked. “I have a daughter! Think of Maya!”

“I am thinking of Maya,” I said softly under my breath. “She deserves to grow up safe from you.”

Three days later, Dr. Richard Miller entered a guilty plea to charges of medical fraud, illegal distribution of controlled substances, and obstruction of justice. His medical license was permanently revoked, and he was sentenced to five years in federal prison.

At Brenda’s sentencing hearing a month later, Judge Henderson sentenced her to twelve years in state prison with no possibility of early parole for the first eight years.
