Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

By Thursday afternoon, Leo finally opened his eyes.
“Mommy...?” his tiny voice cracked through the quiet room.
I fell to my knees by his bed, burying my face in his blanket, sobbing with pure relief. “I’m here, baby! I’m right here!”
Dr. Patel checked his vitals and gave a warm smile. “The toxin has cleared his system. He’s weak, and he’ll need physical therapy and monitoring for a few weeks, but he is going to make a full recovery.”
While the weight on my chest lifted, the war outside was just beginning. Later that evening, while Clara sat with Leo, I walked down to the hospital cafeteria to get some air.
Standing near the entrance was Evelyn—Brenda’s mother—wearing a fur coat and an expression of cold disdain.
“Sarah,” Evelyn said, stepping into my path. “We need to talk.”
“I have nothing to say to you, Evelyn,” I said, trying to walk past her.
She grabbed my arm with a firm, sharp grip. “Listen to me, you ungrateful girl. My family financed your life after my son-in-law’s brother passed away. We gave you money, we gave you status! Brenda made a foolish mistake trying to discipline a wild child, but you are dragging our family name through the mud!”
I yanked my arm back, staring at her with lethal calm. “Your daughter poisoned a nine-year-old child. She left him to die on the grass while she checked her phone.”
“She was panicked!” Evelyn hissed. “Richard’s career is in ruins! The medical board has suspended his license pending investigation! Is this what you want? To destroy the people who fed you?”
“I want justice for my son,” I said, stepping right up into her face. “And if that means watching Richard lose his license and Brenda go to prison, I will gladly sit in the front row of the courtroom.”
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into slits. “You think you’ve won? We have the best defense lawyers in Ohio. By the time we’re done in court, the judge will believe you were the one who gave Leo those drugs out of desperation.”

“Try it,” I whispered. “Because unlike you, I have the truth—and your own granddaughter’s testimony.”
Evelyn flinched, unable to hide the terror in her eyes as I turned my back and walked away.
