Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Throne

Spring returned to Chicago with a violent, freezing rain that washed away the remnants of winter snow and brought a renewed, restless energy to the streets.

In the penthouse office of Moretti Global, Giancarlo Moretti stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the heavy cargo ships navigate the choppy waters of Lake Michigan.

The federal trial of Adrian Vance and Isabella Rossi had concluded the previous week. Adrian had received two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole in a maximum-security federal penitentiary in Florence, Colorado. Isabella, whose high-priced defense attorneys managed to negotiate a plea for her cooperation regarding the syndicate's financial shell companies, was sentenced to twenty-five years in a women’s federal correctional facility in West Virginia.

They had wanted his empire. They had wanted his life.

Instead, Adrian was rotting in a concrete box, and Isabella was scrubbing prison floors, stripped of her name, her wealth, and her freedom.

The heavy oak door of his office opened, and Dante stepped inside, holding a fresh intelligence dossier.

"Boss, the new maritime security protocols are fully active across all Atlantic routes. Not a single crate moves without our direct biometric verification."

Giancarlo turned away from the window, his posture rigid, his face carved from granite. He buttoned the jacket of his bespoke charcoal suit, the jagged scar above his eye catching the fluorescent office light.

"Good," Giancarlo said, his voice echoing with absolute, unquestioned authority. "Let the word go out to every syndicate from New York to Los Angeles. Tell them the Moretti name is closed for business to traitors."

"And for friends, boss?" Dante asked quietly.

Giancarlo walked around his obsidian desk, picking up a crystal glass and pouring two fingers of unpoisoned bourbon. He didn't smile, but the icy, stormy look in his eyes softened just a fraction into a cold, unbreakable resolve.

"There are no friends left, Dante," Giancarlo said, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid. "There are only soldiers, and there are targets."

He raised his glass toward the sprawling, glittering city below, a towering king atop an unshakable mountain of blood, steel, and absolute dominion.

"And my throne," Giancarlo whispered into the empty room, "is built to last an eternity."
