Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Crown

By nightfall, the Moretti corporate headquarters downtown was humming with lethal efficiency.

Giancarlo sat behind his massive obsidian desk on the forty-eighth floor, looking out over the sprawling, glittering expanse of the Chicago skyline. The city stretched out beneath him like a chessboard, every light a district, every highway a supply line, every building a fortress under his absolute command.

Dante stepped into the office, placing a thick leather-bound dossier on the desk.

"The Rossi family patriarch is on line one, boss," Dante reported, his face expressionless. "He’s calling from Palermo. He heard about Isabella’s arrest. He’s... incoherent with apologies. He claims he knew nothing of her plot with Adrian."

Giancarlo picked up the secure desk phone and pressed speaker.

"Don Paolo," Giancarlo said, his voice smooth and commanding.

"Giancarlo, my son!" the frantic, elderly voice of the old-world mafia boss crackled through the speaker. "I swear on the graves of my ancestors, I knew nothing of this betrayal! Isabella was foolish, she was manipulated by that dog Adrian! Please, let us settle this honorably—"

"Save your breath, Paolo," Giancarlo interrupted coldly. "Your bloodline tried to poison me on my wedding night. That is an insult that cannot be washed away with cheap apologies."

"Giancarlo, please! The port alliance—"

"The port alliance is terminated," Giancarlo declared. "Furthermore, the Rossi shipping terminals in Marseille and Naples now belong to Moretti Global as financial restitution for breach of contract. If I hear so much as a whisper of retaliation from your remaining capos in New York, I will personally fly to Sicily and burn your vineyards to ash."

A long, terrified silence stretched across the international line.

"...It will be done, Giancarlo," Don Paolo whispered brokenly. "The terms are accepted."

Giancarlo clicked the phone dead.

He leaned back in his leather executive chair, looking at the city lights. The betrayal had cut deep, leaving a jagged scar across his pride, but it had also burned away the last remnants of complacency. He was no longer just the most feared mafia boss in the region; he was untouchable.
