Chapter 2 - The Widow's Rehearsal

The morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline at 6:15 AM, washing the sprawling estate in a brilliant, golden light that mocked the dark intentions festering within its walls.

Giancarlo lay perfectly still, his eyes closed, regulating his breathing to mimic a man locked in a deep, chemically induced slumber.

At 6:30 AM sharp, the bedroom door clicked open.

Soft, calculated footsteps padded across the Persian rug. Isabella Moretti stepped into the room. Gone was the radiant, blushing bride of yesterday. In her place stood a ruthless, calculating architect of murder. She wore a black silk bathrobe, her hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, her face entirely devoid of makeup to accentuate a look of fragile, devastated shock.

She stopped at the edge of the bed.

For a long moment, there was absolute silence. Giancarlo could feel her gaze scanning his face, searching for any sign of life, any flutter of an eyelid.

Slowly, deliberately, Isabella reached out and pressed two manicured fingers against the pulse point on the side of his neck.

Giancarlo slowed his heart rate—a trick he had learned years ago during interrogation training—making his pulse thrum faintly, sluggishly, as if struggling to maintain life under a heavy toxin.

Isabella pulled her hand back as if burned. A triumphant, chilling smile flashed across her lips—a smile so cruel it made Giancarlo’s fingers twitch with the urge to wrap around her throat right then and there. But he held his control. The trap wasn't fully set yet.

Isabella turned on her heel, walking swiftly to the hallway door. She threw it open and let out a piercing, Academy-Award-winning shriek of pure, agonizing horror.

"Help! Someone help me! Giancarlo! Oh God, my husband!"

Within seconds, heavy footsteps echoed up the stairs. Adrian was the first through the door, wearing a slate-gray suit, looking impeccably groomed, his face painted with a masterpiece of simulated panic.

"Isabella! What is it?!" Adrian shouted, rushing into the room and pulling her into his arms as she buried her face in his chest, sobbing hysterically.

"He... he won't wake up!" Isabella wept, her voice trembling with theatrical perfection. "I woke up and touched his arm, and he was cold! The glass... the whiskey on the nightstand... oh Adrian, he’s gone!"

Adrian rushed to the bedside, pressing his hand against Giancarlo’s chest, leaning down to check his breath. He stayed there for five agonizing seconds, perfectly playing his role. When he stood back up, his eyes met Isabella’s across the bed.

In that fleeting glance, Giancarlo saw the absolute, intoxicating certainty of their victory.

"Call 911," Adrian barked at a pair of terrified estate guards who had crowded into the doorway. "And call Dr. Vance. Get the legal team down here immediately."

"No," Isabella whispered, wiping a dry eye. "Call the senior board partners first. And bring my father. If Giancarlo is... if he’s truly gone, the Moretti shipping lines must be stabilized before the markets open."

Adrian nodded grimly, patting her shoulder. "I'll handle everything, my love. You're safe now."

My love.

Giancarlo listened beneath closed eyelids, every muscle in his body coiled like a steel spring. Enjoy it while it lasts, Adrian, he thought. By noon, you won't even own the shirt on your back.
