Chapter 6 - The Cleansing Fire

Within an hour of the playback, the transformation of the Moretti estate was swift, clinical, and absolute.
The federal and local authorities didn't come to arrest Giancarlo; instead, two federal prosecutors working directly with Giancarlo’s legal retainer arrived through the private security gates with federal arrest warrants for Adrian Vance, Marcus Vance, and Isabella Rossi on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, corporate wire fraud, and interstate financial terrorism.
Isabella was led out of the mansion in handcuffs, her designer black mourning dress dragging across the gravel driveway, her face buried in her hands as camera crews from local news stations—tipped off by Dante—flashed blinding lights in her face.
Adrian put up no physical fight as Dante and the enforcers zip-tied his hands behind his back. The arrogance that had fueled his betrayal had evaporated, replaced by the hollow, vacant stare of a man who realized he was already dead to the world.
"Where are you taking us?" Adrian muttered as they shoved him into the back of an unmarked black van.
Giancarlo stood on the grand front steps of the mansion, watching the doors slam shut. He didn't lean down to answer Adrian directly; he simply let his cold, merciless eyes meet Adrian's through the reinforced wire mesh of the van window.
"You're going to a federal holding facility in Indiana," Giancarlo said evenly. "And don't worry about your legal fees, Adrian. I've already hired the most expensive defense attorneys in the country—the kind who specialize in ensuring men like you spend every remaining breath of their lives in solitary confinement, reflecting on the day they decided to bite the hand that fed them."
The van doors locked with a heavy clack, and the vehicle sped down the driveway, disappearing into the Chicago traffic.
Giancarlo turned around, walking back into the grand foyer where Rosa stood nervously wringing her hands by the staircase.
"Sir... what happens now?" Rosa asked, her voice timid.
Giancarlo stopped, looking down at the young maid who had risked her life to save his. He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a heavy velvet pouch, and placed it gently in her hands.
"Inside is a certified deed to a coastal estate in Maine, along with a tax-free trust fund of one million dollars," Giancarlo said quietly. "A car is waiting outside to take you to the private airfield. You leave the state today, Rosa. Start a new life. You've earned every penny."
May you like
Rosa stared at the pouch, tears welling in her eyes, before bowing her head deeply. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti. May God bless you."
"God has nothing to do with it," Giancarlo smiled faintly. "Loyalty does."
