Chapter 8 - The Remaking of an Empire

Over the next three months, the underworld underwent a brutal, thorough purging.
Every lieutenant, guard, accountant, and lawyer who had accepted a bribe from Adrian or Isabella was methodically rooted out. Some were handed over to federal authorities with ironclad RICO packages; others were quietly squeezed out of their territories, their operations absorbed directly into the Moretti syndicate.
By winter, the Chicago docks were busier than ever, moving billions in international cargo under tighter, more paranoid security than a military installation. No one dared question Giancarlo Moretti. No one dared utter his name without a tremor of genuine terror in their voice.
Yet, despite the overwhelming power and absolute control he had reclaimed, the master suite in the Moretti estate remained mostly empty.
Giancarlo spent his nights in his private study, surrounded by ledgers, security feeds, and the quiet ghost of a wedding night that had nearly ended his reign. He had proven that he was a monster forged in ice, capable of outsmarting his closest friends and executing cold-blooded vengeance without batting an eye.
But power, he realized as he poured himself a glass of unpoisoned Kentucky bourbon on a freezing December evening, was a very lonely throne.
Dante walked into the study, breaking his train of thought.
"Boss, the freight shipment from Antwerp has cleared customs without issue. The board has ratified your emergency restructuring proposals unanimously."
"Good," Giancarlo said, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "Double the night patrols around the northern docks anyway. I don't want any loose ends."
"Understood," Dante paused, hesitating for a fraction of a second before speaking again. "Boss... it’s been three months since the trial. The estate feels... quiet. Too quiet."
Giancarlo looked up, his stormy eyes fixing on his most loyal captain. "A quiet empire is a profitable empire, Dante."

"True," Dante murmured, turning toward the door. "But even a king needs a court, boss. Not jackals like Adrian. Just... people who aren't afraid of the dark."
Giancarlo didn't answer. He watched Dante close the study door, leaving him alone with the crackling fire in the hearth.
