Chapter 4 - The Unseen Pain

Claire stood frozen in the dark hallway for what felt like an eternity, the sound of Adrian’s quiet, agonizing sorrow piercing straight through her protective walls. All the rumors she had heard about him—the coldness, the ruthlessness, the iron fists—dissolved into ash. Underneath the tailored suits and the syndicate armor was simply a broken man who had lost his wife and was terrified of losing his sons, too.
She quietly retreated to her room, her mind racing until dawn painted the sky in pale shades of grey.
The next morning, the household woke up to a new kind of tension.
When Claire walked down to the kitchen at 7:30 AM, Martha was frantically whisking eggs while two burly security guards stood by the back door talking in hushed tones.
"What's happening?" Claire asked, pouring herself a cup of black coffee.
"Mr. Moretti left early for the downtown docks," Martha whispered, her face pale. "Word came in from our contacts. The Luciano family is trying to muscle in on our maritime shipping routes in Brooklyn. There was a warehouse fire near Red Hook last night."
Claire’s breath caught. "Is he in danger?"
"Mr. Moretti is the danger," Martha said grimly. "But it means he’ll be distracted. And when he’s distracted, the boys get restless."
Sure enough, by 10:00 AM, the triplets had launched Operation Chaos.
Claire walked into the grand library to find books pulled off the shelves in a massive barricade, with Noah standing on top of a mahogany table holding a squirt gun filled with purple ink.
"Surrender, nanny!" Noah declared heroically. "You're trespassing in our fortress!"
Claire didn't yell. She didn't panic. She simply crossed her arms, leaned against the doorframe, and raised an eyebrow.
"Is that purple ink?" she asked calmly.
"Yes! And it doesn't wash out of clothes for a week!" Caleb yelled from behind the sofa.
"Good thing I’m wearing an old sweater," Claire sighed, stepping into the room. "Though, if you're going to stage a siege, your supply lines are terrible. You barricaded the door, but you didn't block the garden french doors. If I were an attacking force, I could flank you from the terrace in ten seconds."
The boys froze. Noah lowered the squirt gun a fraction of an inch. "You... you could?"
"Easily," Claire walked over, picking up a history book that had fallen on the floor and dusting it off. "Want to see how real military strategy works? Or are you content just making a mess for Martha to clean up?"
Miles, who had been sitting quietly in the corner clutching a battered stuffed bear, looked up with big, curious eyes. "Can you... can you show us?"
Noah glared at his younger brother. "Miles, we're supposed to make her leave! Remember the plan?"
"The plan is boring," Miles whispered softly, his voice trembling slightly. "The other ladies cried or yelled. She... she talks to us like we're real people."
Claire’s heart melted. She knelt down to Miles's eye level, ignoring the purple ink splattered across the carpet. "I'm not going anywhere, Miles. At least, not until Sunday evening. So you might as well teach me how your Nerf blasters work, or I'm going to start making you practice cursive writing for two hours."
May you like
The threat of cursive writing was apparently worse than any mafia syndicate threat. Noah groaned, dropping the squirt gun onto the sofa. "Fine. But if we let you play, you have to tell us how you stopped the earthworm trap without screaming."
By afternoon, the grand library had been transformed into an elaborate fortress made of couch cushions, blankets, and hardcover encyclopedias. For the first time in two years, the sound of genuine, uninhibited children's laughter echoed through the solemn halls of the Moretti estate.
