Chapter 7 - The Forbidden Room

The next morning, the atmosphere in the Moretti mansion had shifted entirely. The cold, suffocating gloom that had choked the halls for two years felt lighter, replaced by an uneasy but hopeful stillness.
The triplets were actually eating breakfast at the dining table without arguing, whispering excitedly among themselves about the marshmallow catapult they planned to build outside later.
Adrian sat at the head of the table, drinking his black coffee, watching Claire with a gaze that was no longer guarded, but intensely focused.
"You finish your forty-eight hours tonight at six PM," Adrian said quietly as Martha cleared the plates. "Are you planning to collect your twenty thousand dollars and walk out that door?"
Claire paused, her coffee cup halfway to her mouth. She thought of her apartment, the eviction notice, and Lily. "I need the money, Adrian. My apartment is on the line."
"I can double it," Adrian said instantly, his voice urgent. "Stay. Be a permanent fixture in this house. The boys... they haven't smiled this much since Elena died. And I... I haven't felt human in just as long."
Claire’s heart skipped a beat. The offer was staggering. It would solve every financial problem she had for the next ten years. But looking into Adrian's dark eyes, she knew it wasn't just about money anymore. She was falling for a dangerous, complicated man who lived in a world of shadows.
"I need to think about it," Claire whispered honestly.
"Take all the time you need," Adrian stood up, adjusting his cuffs. "I have to go meet Victor at the secure warehouse to settle the shipping dispute. I'll be back by three o'clock."
After Adrian left, Claire spent the afternoon reading adventure stories with the boys in the library. By 2:30 PM, the triplets had fallen asleep in a cozy pile of cushions, exhausted from playing tag in the gardens.
Quietly slipping out of the library, Claire found herself wandering up the grand staircase.
She reached the second-floor landing.
She stood before the locked door at the end of the hall.
The door Adrian had strictly forbidden her to touch.
She knew she shouldn't. She knew it was a breach of trust. But an overwhelming, irresistible pull drew her forward. She reached out and tested the brass handle.
To her utter shock, it turned smoothly.
Adrian hadn't locked it before he left.
Claire pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped inside.
Her breath caught in her throat.
The room wasn't a dungeon, nor was it a secret armory of illegal contraband. It was a pristine, beautifully preserved artist's studio. Canvases lined the walls—landscapes of the Hudson River, charcoal sketches of the Westchester estate, and stunning, vibrant oil portraits of Elena Moretti laughing in the sun. In the center of the room stood an easel with an unfinished painting of Noah, Caleb, and Miles playing in the garden, painted with such profound, aching love that tears instantly sprang to Claire’s eyes.
This was where Adrian came to grieve. This was where the ruthless mafia boss stripped away his armor and remembered how to feel.
As Claire walked around the room, admiring a delicate charcoal sketch of Elena, her shoe brushed against something metallic on the floor near the back corner.
She looked down.
Half-hidden beneath a stack of old framing canvases was a heavy, fireproof document safe. The door of the safe was slightly ajar, and a thick manila folder labeled CASCA/LOGISTICS EXPOSÉ was sliding out.

Curiosity overriding her better judgment, Claire knelt down and pulled the folder open.
What she saw inside made her blood run cold.
