Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Sunset

While Claire was busy teaching the boys how to build a gravity-fed marshmallow catapult in the back garden, the security gates at the front of the estate buzzed urgently.
Martha hurried out onto the terrace, her face etched with panic. "Mrs. Donovan! You need to bring the boys inside right now. Mr. Moretti’s car just pulled up, and... and there are federal agents with him."
Claire froze. "Federal agents?"
"FBI," Martha whispered, wringing her hands. "Special Agent Vance—not Victor, his brother Daniel—has been trying to pin racketeering charges on Mr. Moretti for three years. If they're here with a search warrant, it means things have escalated."
"Boys," Claire said instantly, turning to the triplets with a firm, calm expression. "Inside. Now. Go straight to the east wing playroom and stay there with Martha. Do not come out until I say so."
"Is Daddy in trouble?" Noah asked, his childish defiance instantly vanishing, replaced by sudden, sharp fear.
"Your father can take care of himself," Claire said, giving Noah a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. "Go on. Now."
When Claire walked around to the front courtyard, the scene was chaotic. Three black SUVs with government plates were parked haphazardly across the pristine gravel driveway. Four armed FBI agents stood near the entrance, while Special Agent Daniel Vance—a tall, arrogant man in a tailored grey suit—was arguing loudly with Adrian.
Adrian stood on the stone steps, his coat unbuttoned, his expression like frozen granite. He looked cold, dangerous, and utterly untouchable—the very definition of a syndicate boss cornered by the law.
"You don't have jurisdiction in Westchester for this warrant, Vance, and you know it," Adrian’s voice cut through the evening air like shards of ice.
"I have a federal judge's signature authorizing a full sweep of this property, Moretti," Vance sneered, holding up a paper folder. "We have intel that your shipping company is laundering cartel funds through your private accounts. We're tearing this house apart from top to bottom."
"You step one foot inside my home without local clearance, and I'll have my legal team bury your career so deep you'll need a shovel to talk to a judge," Adrian stepped forward, his massive frame radiating lethal intimidation.
Vance flinched slightly, stepping back, but signaled his men to move forward. "Search the grounds!"
"Stop!"
The crisp, clear voice rang out across the courtyard, freezing everyone in their tracks.
Adrian turned his head sharply. Claire stepped out from the terrace shadow, walking steadily across the gravel until she stood directly between Adrian Moretti and the federal agents.
Agent Vance blinked, looking Claire up and down with open condescension. "And who are you? Another high-priced lawyer trying to obstruct justice?"
"I am Claire Donovan, the household manager and private guardian of the Moretti children," Claire lied smoothly, projecting an aura of absolute authority that made even Adrian raise an eyebrow. "And as the legally registered occupant of this residence during executive hours, I demand to see the exact jurisdictional addendum on that search warrant."
Vance scowled. "Lady, step aside before I arrest you for interfering with a federal investigation."
"You can arrest me all you want, Agent Vance," Claire stepped closer, her eyes flashing with fearless defiance. "But if you execute a federal warrant in a private family residence without local police escort and proper district clearance during non-business hours, my attorney will file a civil rights violation so fast your supervisor will demote you to parking lot security by Tuesday morning."
Adrian stared at the back of Claire’s head, utter astonishment flickering across his hard features. A broke single mother from Queens was standing up to an armed federal prosecutor without blinking an eye.
Vance hesitated, weighing the legal risk. He glared at Adrian, then at Claire. "This isn't over, Moretti. We'll be back with a tighter seal."

"Don't let the gate hit you on the way out," Claire said sweetly.
Within five minutes, the black SUVs roared down the driveway and disappeared into the twilight.
