Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Silence settled over the courtyard once again, broken only by the rustle of the evening wind through the oak trees.
Adrian slowly walked down the stone steps until he was standing just inches from Claire. Up close, the tension radiating from him was palpable. His dark eyes burned with a mixture of fury, shock, and something dangerously close to raw gratitude.
"Are you insane?" Adrian hissed, his voice dangerously low. "That man is a federal prosecutor. He could have arrested you on the spot for obstruction."
"He didn't," Claire countered, standing her ground, refusing to look away from his intense gaze. "Because he knew his warrant was legally shaky, and he didn't want a high-profile lawsuit making the front page of the New York Times while he's running for district attorney next year."
Adrian let out a short, harsh breath that sounded almost like a laugh. "You stood up to Daniel Vance. In my own driveway."
"Someone had to," Claire said softly, her anger fading into genuine concern as she looked at the exhaustion etched deep into his face. "You look like you haven't slept in three days, Mr. Moretti. The shipping docks, the FBI, the boys... how much can one man carry before he breaks?"
Adrian flinched, stepping back slightly as if her words had struck a raw nerve. He turned away, staring out toward the dark horizon. "You know nothing about what I carry, Mrs. Donovan."
"I know you're grieving," Claire said quietly, taking a step toward him.
Adrian froze. His shoulders stiffened rigidly. "What did you say?"
"I heard you last night," Claire confessed, her voice gentle, devoid of judgment. "In the hallway outside the locked room. You don't have to pretend to be made of iron around me, Adrian. It's okay to miss her."
The use of his first name hung heavily in the air between them.
For a long moment, Adrian didn't move. Then, slowly, he turned around. His dark eyes were shimmering with unshed tears—a terrifying, vulnerable sight for a man who ruled an empire.
"Elena loved this house," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking slightly for the first time. "She planted those rosebushes by the terrace. Every time I look at my sons, I see her eyes staring back at me. And every time I look at them, I'm terrified that someone will try to take them from me, the way they took her."

"Nobody is taking your sons," Claire said firmly, stepping closer and placing a gentle, reassuring hand on his sleeve. "They're fighters. Just like their father. But they need a father, Adrian, not a warden."
Adrian looked down at her hand resting on his arm, then slowly raised his gaze to meet hers. The distance between them vanished, the heavy walls of the mafia boss's fortress crumbling into dust under the simple, healing power of human empathy.
