Chapter 10 - The Promise of the Shore
A year later.
The beach below the glass mansion was covered in soft, warm sand, the summer waves of the lake lapping gently against the shore.
A small white tent had been set up on the grass, decorated with hundreds of yellow tulips and blue ribbons that fluttered in the warm breeze.
Adrian stood near the altar, wearing a tailored gray linen suit that made his eyes look like the summer sky. Beside him stood Marcus, his best man, looking unusually relaxed in a matching suit.
The music began—a soft, acoustic version of a song about home and new beginnings.
Lily walked down the grassy aisle first. She was six now, her blond curls longer, wearing a beautiful yellow dress. She carried a basket of flower petals, throwing them onto the grass with a serious, focused expression that made the guests smile.
As she reached the altar, she looked up at Adrian, winked, and made a quick sign.
Adrian smiled, tapping his own chest in response.
Then came Mara.
She was stunning in a simple, elegant ivory lace gown, her dark hair styled in soft waves. She carried a bouquet of yellow tulips and rosemary, her brown eyes locked onto Adrian’s with a love that had survived the darkest winter.
When her hand found his, the priest smiled and began the ceremony.
There were no long, complicated vows. In a world where words had so often been used to betray, they preferred the silence of true commitment.
"Do you, Adrian Cross, take this woman?"
"I do," Adrian said, his voice carrying over the sound of the lake.
"And do you, Mara Bennett?"
"I do," she whispered.
As they kissed, a deep, passionate embrace that carried the promise of a lifetime of warm kitchens and quiet mornings, Lily ran forward, throwing her arms around both of their legs.
Adrian reached down, lifting his daughter into his arms, holding his wife close with the other.
The whispers in Chicago had been wrong.
