Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Snow

At 2:14 AM, the power to the lakefront mansion died completely.
The backup generators did not kick in. The thick, bulletproof glass of the main salon was the only barrier between the occupants and the freezing, howling winds of Lake Michigan.
Adrian sat in his high-backed leather chair in the center of the dark salon. He had not put on his robe; he wore a simple black suit, his fingers resting lightly on the cold steel of a customized Beretta .9mm on his lap.
The heavy oak front doors of the mansion creaked open.
A group of four men entered, their boots crunching on the glass of the shattered security vestibule. At their center was Nolan Cross, his white cashmere coat looking clean and pristine even in the dark, snowy foyer.
"Adrian!" Nolan called out, his voice echoing off the high marble walls. "Come on, big brother. Let’s not make this difficult. The Commission has already signed the papers. You are medically unfit to lead. I’m just here to collect the keys to the kingdom."
Adrian did not answer. He waited, his breathing slow, his fingers steady on the trigger.
Nolan and his men stepped into the salon, their flashlights cutting through the darkness, their beams catching the frost that had begun to form on the indoor plants.
When the light hit Adrian’s face, Nolan smiled.
"You look terrible, Adrian," Nolan said, taking a step closer. "Truly. The Johns Hopkins doctors told my associates you wouldn't survive the winter. Why cling to the docks? Why cling to the money? You can't take it to the grave."
"You always were impatient, Nolan," Adrian said, his voice surprisingly strong in the cold room. "Aconitine is a slow poison. It takes months to build up in the system. You must have been sweating every time I drank my tea, wondering if today would be the day my heart finally gave out."
Nolan’s smile did not falter, but his eyes turned cold. "You were always too stubborn to die when you were supposed to. But it doesn't matter now. The warehouse captains are mine. The port authority has already frozen your shipping licenses. You are a king with no country, Adrian."
"And what about Claire?" Adrian asked.
Nolan let out a soft laugh. "Ah, Claire. Still your weakness, even after all these years. Yes, I brought her back. I needed a distraction to keep you from looking too closely at your security team. It’s amazing how easily a strong man is blinded by an old flame."
"I wasn't blinded, Nolan," Adrian said.
From the shadows behind the grand staircase, a laser sight painted a bright red dot directly over Nolan’s heart.
Marcus Vale stepped out of the darkness, his weapon raised, his face devoid of any warmth.
"Your security team is loyal to the man who pays them, Nolan," Marcus said. "And Adrian pays in respect. You pay in promises."

Nolan’s men immediately raised their weapons, but before anyone could fire, a small, pale figure darted from the hallway, running straight toward Adrian’s chair.
It was Lily.
