Chapter 9 - The Sign of the Heart

That evening, the dining room of the mansion was filled with light.
For the first time in fifteen years, Adrian had invited his captains and their wives to a dinner that was not about business, or turf wars, or shipping contracts. It was a celebration.
Mara sat at his right hand, her brown eyes shining with a quiet, confident beauty that had finally found its home. Lily sat beside her, her yellow plastic giraffe standing proudly in the center of the table as the official guest of honor.
Marcus Vale raised his glass from the end of the long table.
"To the boss," Marcus said, his voice carrying a warmth that his men had rarely heard. "And to the family we chose."
"To the family," the captains echoed, their glasses clinking under the crystal chandeliers.
After the guests had departed, Adrian and Mara stood on the terrace, watching the moon rise over the quiet waters of Lake Michigan. The city lights twinkled in the distance, a sprawling, beautiful empire that no longer felt like a prison.
"I never asked you," Mara said, her hand resting on the stone railing, close to his. "Why you didn't fire me that first day. You could have had us removed in seconds."
May you like
Adrian turned to look at her, his hand sliding over hers, his warm fingers weaving through hers.
"Because when your daughter put her hand on my forehead, she didn't just feel the pain, Mara," he said, his voice deep and tender. "She told me that I was still alive. And for the first time in my life, I wanted to stay that way."
