Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Waterfront

By morning, the blizzard had passed, leaving Chicago buried under three feet of clean, white snow.
The police, acting on an anonymous tip containing detailed financial records and offshore account numbers, raided Nolan Cross’s penthouse downtown. They found evidence of tax evasion, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder—including the receipts for the aconitine shipments from a black-market pharmaceutical supplier in Montreal.
Nolan was arrested before he could reach his private jet at O'Hare.
At the lakefront mansion, the power had been restored, and the fireplace in the main salon crackled with a warm, roaring fire.
Adrian sat on the sofa, a thick wool blanket over his legs. He looked exhausted, the lines on his face deeper than ever, but there was a quiet peace in his posture.
Claire Whitaker stood by the window, her white coat packed into her suitcase near the door.
"You're sending me back?" she asked, her voice tight.
"I’m sending you to a safehouse in Maine, Claire," Adrian said, not looking at her. "Nolan’s associates are still active. You’ll be protected there. But you will not return to Chicago. And you will not contact me again."
Claire looked at him, her eyes searching his face for any sign of the man who had once promised her the world. "You really don't love me anymore, do you?"
Adrian looked toward the kitchen, where the scent of baking bread was starting to drift through the hallway. He could hear the faint, happy laughter of Lily as she played with her puppy on the rug.

"I loved a memory, Claire," Adrian said softly. "But memories don't keep you warm in the winter."
Claire did not answer. She took her suitcase and walked out of the house, her heels clicking against the marble floor until the front doors closed behind her for the last time.
