Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The confrontation in the medical suite had left Adrian’s heart rate dangerously unstable.

Marcus had removed Claire from the estate under strict orders, placing her in a secure hotel downtown under Salvatore-guard watch until her story could be verified. Adrian did not trust her. In his world, a return after two years of silence was rarely an act of mercy; it was usually the final stage of a trap.

By nightfall, the sleet had turned into a full-blown blizzard, burying the glass mansion under a heavy, white shroud.

Mara sat in her small bedroom in the staff quarters, her fingers moving quickly as she communicated with Lily in the dim light of a bedside lamp.

Mara’s heart ached. She knew her daughter was right. Even during their brief interactions in the kitchen, she had noticed the blue tint on Adrian’s lips, the way his chest labored for every breath of cold air.

A soft knock on her door startled her.

She opened it to find Marcus standing in the hallway, his heavy coat covered in snow, his face grim.

"Pack a bag, Mara," Marcus said quietly. "For you and the girl."

Mara’s stomach dropped. "Are we being fired?"

"No," Marcus said, looking down the dark corridor. "Nolan’s men have been spotted at the perimeter. The security cameras on the east gate were cut five minutes ago. Your daughter’s presence here has become public knowledge. Nolan knows Adrian cares about her, and in our world, that makes her a target. We’re moving you to the safehouse in Geneva Lake."

"And Adrian?" Mara asked, her voice rising in panic.

"Adrian stays," Marcus said. "He is the shield. If he leaves, Nolan’s faction will realize we are running, and they’ll launch a full assault on the highway. He has to stay here and face his brother."

Mara looked back at Lily, who was watching them with wide, curious eyes. She didn't understand the words being spoken, but she could read the fear in her mother’s posture.

"No," Mara said, her chin lifting with that same quiet determination Adrian had noted before. "We aren't leaving him."

"Mara, this is mafia business," Marcus hissed. "You are a maid. You don't understand the level of violence—"

"I understand that he is dying, and he is alone," Mara said, stepping past Marcus into the hallway. "And I know that if we leave, he will have nothing left to fight for."
