Chapter 4 - The Unlikely Ally

The chaotic scene that followed was glorious.
Richard tried to rush out through the private executive exit, but Arthur and the security team blocked his path until two federal officers arrived to place him under arrest for securities fraud and grand larceny.
My mother sat frozen in her seat, sobbing uncontrollably as her husband was led away in handcuffs. When she reached out to touch my hand as I walked past, I gently pulled away.
"You chose him for five years, Mom," I said softly, the pain still raw. "You never chose me."
An hour later, the boardroom was cleared. Only Grandma, Julian, and I remained.
"You handled yourself remarkably well, Miss Sterling," Julian said, offering a genuine smile as he closed his briefcase.
"I couldn't have done it without that injunction," I admitted, studying him closely. "How long have you been working with my grandmother?"
"Since the day your father died," Julian revealed. "David Sterling was my mentor. He paid for my law school tuition when I was a struggling student. When he realized his health was failing and Richard was circling his family, he recruited me to build an ironclad trap. We spent nine years letting Richard dig his own grave."
"Nine years?" I gasped. "Grandma, you kept this a secret for nine years?"
"I had to, Emily," Grandma said, touching my cheek gently. "If Richard knew Julian was waiting in the wings, he would have changed tactics. We needed him to commit obvious, undeniable crimes within the company so we could remove him permanently without lengthy civil court battles."
"So what happens now?" I asked, sitting down across from Julian.
"Now comes the hard part," Julian warned, his expression turning serious. "Richard may be in custody, but he isn't defeated yet. He has powerful allies in the shadows—a syndicate of predatory private equity investors known as Apex Global. They were funding his attempt to strip Sterling Enterprises of its assets."
Julian pulled up a digital blueprint on his tablet and turned it toward me.
"Apex Global holds $30 million of Sterling Enterprises' corporate debt," Julian explained. "Richard secretly renegotiated the loan terms last year. There is a default clause: if the company experiences a sudden leadership change or executive instability, Apex can demand immediate repayment of the $30 million within fourteen days."
I stared at the numbers on the screen. "$30 million in cash? In two weeks?"
"Our liquid reserves are currently tied up in international shipping contracts," Grandma noted, her brow furrowing. "If Apex demands full repayment now, Sterling Enterprises could be forced into involuntary bankruptcy."
"And that's exactly what Richard planned," Julian said. "He wanted to buy the company’s liquidated assets for pennies on the dollar through his Panama shell company."
I looked at Julian, then at Grandma. The fear that had plagued me all morning suddenly dissolved into a cold, calculating focus. My father had built this company from nothing. I wasn't going to let a group of corporate predators tear it apart.

"Then we don't give them the chance," I said firmly. "Julian, I need a complete breakdown of every asset, every contract, and every liability under Sterling Enterprises by tonight. We're going to fight them on their own turf."
Julian looked at me, a flash of genuine admiration in his eyes. "Consider it done, CEO Sterling."
