Chapter 8 - The Final Reckoning

As the press conference dissolved into a frenzy of news reporting, federal agents entered the auditorium through the main doors.
They weren't just there to escort Richard back to prison. They had a team of investigators from the State District Attorney's office with them.
"Richard Vance," Lead Investigator Miller announced, stepping up to Richard with a fresh arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, grand larceny, market manipulation, and..."
The investigator paused, looking at a newly unsealed document in his hands.
"...and the attempted second-degree murder of David Sterling."
A heavy, suffocating shock fell over the room.
My heart stopped. I stepped down from the stage, Grandma and Julian right beside me. "What did you say?" I asked, my voice trembling.
Investigator Miller turned to us. "Miss Sterling, two hours ago, following a confession provided by your mother during police questioning, forensic authorities executed a search warrant on Richard's private estate storage locker."
My mother had confessed?
"Inside the locker," Miller continued, "we discovered a bottle of digitalis toxin—a heart-medication compound—matching the exact chemical trace signatures found in your father's medical records prior to his cardiac arrest nine years ago. Your mother admitted that Richard had been secretly mixing the compound into your father’s daily vitamin supplements."
Tears welled up in my eyes, but this time, they were tears of justice.
Grandma let out a soft, choked breath, closing her eyes as nine years of painful suspicion were finally validated.
Richard went completely wild, spitting and cursing as the federal agents wrestled him to the floor, slapping heavy iron cuffs onto his wrists. "She's lying! Olivia is insane! You can't prove anything!"
"We don't need to prove it solely on her testimony, Mr. Vance," Julian spoke up, stepping forward with a cold, sharp gaze. "Your private ledger detailed the offshore wire transfers to the pharmaceutical distributor in Zurich. It's all over for you."
As the police dragged Richard out of the building to the flashes of dozens of media cameras, his screaming echoes faded into the distance. His reign of terror over our family was finally, permanently over.
I stood in the center of the grand lobby, surrounded by the towering glass structure my father had built. Julian reached down and took my hand, gently squeezing it.
"It's over, Emily," Julian said softly. "You saved your father's legacy."

I looked at Grandma, who nodded through her tears, giving me a smile of pure pride.
"No, Julian," I said, looking out at the city skyline as the afternoon sun broke through the storm clouds. "We didn't just save it. We're going to build something even greater."
