Chapter 5 - The Snake in the House

Over the next five days, headquarters became my home. Julian and I worked sixteen-hour days, combing through corporate ledgers, meeting with regional directors, and reassuring frightened investors.

Working side-by-side with Julian was an revelation. He was sharp, brilliant, and possessed an unwavering integrity that mirrored my father's. Amidst the storm of corporate warfare, a deep bond of mutual respect—and something warmer—began to form between us.

However, the threat inside our walls hadn't been fully purged.

Late on a Thursday evening, while working late in my father’s office at the estate, I noticed the light on under the door of the archives room down the hall.

I motioned for Arthur, who was guarding the corridor, and we silently approached the room.

I pushed the door open.

Standing by the heavy steel safe was my mother.

She was holding a flash drive, frantically copying confidential financial records and trade secrets from our secure servers.

"Mom?" my voice trembled with disbelief.

My mother jumped, dropping the flash drive onto the hardwood floor. She turned around, her face pale and sunken.

"Emily!" she gasped, clutching her chest. "I... I was just..."

"You're stealing company trade secrets," I said, stepping into the room. Arthur picked up the flash drive and handed it to me. "Who were you copying these for? Richard?"

"He's in jail, Emily!" my mother cried, tears streaming down her face. "They set his bail at $5 million! He called me from the detention center... he said if I could get him the client list and trade contracts for Sterling's European routes, his friends at Apex Global would post his bail and drop the legal charges against him!"

I stared at her, deeply horrified. "He is using you! Even behind bars, he is manipulating you to destroy your own daughter's legacy!"

"He loves me, Emily!" she screamed, hysterically. "You don't understand! Your father died and left me with nothing! Richard was the only one who made me feel valued!"

"My father left you a multi-million dollar trust annuity!" I shouted back, tears finally spilling from my eyes. "He left you a home, protection, and security! But it wasn't enough for you, was it? You wanted the attention of a con man who viewed you as nothing more than an entry ticket into our family's fortune!"

Grandma walked into the room, her expression lined with profound sorrow. She looked at her daughter—the woman she had raised—and shook her head.

"Olivia," Grandma said quietly. "I kept hoping that when the truth came out, you would wake up. But you are addicted to his poison."

"Mother, please!" Olivia begged, dropping to her knees. "Don't let them prosecute me! I'm your daughter!"

"You tried to betray your own child for a criminal who robbed us," Grandma said, her voice dripping with painful finality. "Arthur, lock her in the guest wing. Strip her of all access to phones and internet until the court hearing."

As Arthur led my sobbing mother away, I sank against the desk, burying my face in my hands. The emotional toll was crushing. My own mother was willing to sell me out for the man who tried to ruin us.

Julian stepped into the doorway, having rushed over as soon as he heard the security alert. He walked over, knelt beside my chair, and gently placed his hand over mine.

"You're not alone in this, Emily," he said softly. "We're going to win this fight. For your father, and for you."

I looked into his clear, steady eyes and felt a wave of strength wash over me. "We're going to do more than win, Julian. We're going to trap them all."
