Chapter 6 - The Media Storm

The next morning, Apex Global struck back.
At 7:00 AM, major financial news outlets leaked a massive story: “Sterling Enterprises Facing Impending Insolvency As 20-Year-Old Heiress Takes Control.”
Accompanying the article were doctored financial statements—the very documents Richard's contacts had tried to engineer—claiming that Sterling Enterprises was secretly bankrupt and that my father had committed tax fraud prior to his death.
Stock prices for Sterling's publicly traded subsidiary plunged by 25% within two hours of the market opening. Panic erupted among shareholders.
"Apex Global just officially issued their acceleration notice," Julian reported, walking into my office with a sheaf of urgent notices. "They are demanding full payment of the $30 million debt by 5:00 PM tomorrow, or they will file for forced corporate receivership."
"And the media is eating it up," I said, watching the news ticker on the wall monitor. "Richard is using his external network to create a panic so our investors pull out, forcing us to liquidate."
Grandma walked in, wearing a sharp white suit, looking like a veteran general preparing for battle. "The media wants a story, Emily. Let's give them one."
"What are you thinking, Grandma?" I asked.
"A press conference," Grandma said, her eyes flashing with determination. "Today at 2:00 PM in the main auditorium. We invite every financial journalist, every major investor, and representatives from Apex Global."
"If we go public without the $30 million in hand, Apex will call our bluff live on television," Julian warned thoughtfully.
"Who said we don't have the $30 million?" I said, a sudden realization striking me.
I looked at Julian, then at Grandma.
"The trust," I whispered. "My father's irrevocable trust wasn't just holding the company shares. It had a secondary reserve fund, didn't it?"
Grandma smiled proudly. "Your father was a master chess player, Emily. He knew that if Richard ever tried to starve the company of liquidity, we would need an offshore counter-balance. The secondary reserve fund holds $50 million in gold bullion and liquid Treasury bonds, untouched for nine years."

Julian let out a breathless chuckle. "They think they're cornering a defenseless heir, but they're walking right into an armored vault."
"Let's not just pay off the debt," I said, my voice filled with cold resolve. "Let's use the press conference to turn the tables on Apex Global completely."
