Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Trap

For the next four hours, Julian, Grandma, and I executed a masterstroke of financial warfare.

While Apex Global was busy preparing their legal team to execute the receivership order live during our press conference, Julian quietly used our $50 million reserve fund to execute a stealth operation on the stock market.

Because Apex Global had shorted Sterling stock—betting millions that our stock price would collapse completely—they had exposed themselves to immense financial risk.

"If we buy back our own shares rapidly while executing a short squeeze," Julian explained, typing feverishly on his laptop, "Apex will be forced to buy back shares at hyper-inflated prices to cover their positions. They'll lose hundreds of millions in hours."

"Do it," I commanded.

At 2:00 PM, the grand auditorium at Sterling Headquarters was packed with over two hundred reporters, news cameras, and anxious shareholders. Sitting in the front row, wearing arrogant expressions, were the senior executives of Apex Global, along with Richard’s high-priced defense attorney, who had managed to get him temporary medical release for the afternoon under police supervision.

Richard sat in a wheelchair near the side exit, wearing an orange jumpsuit under a dark trench coat, handcuffed to a guard. He had insisted on being present to watch my downfall.

I walked up to the podium, stepping into the glaring bright lights. The room went silent.

"Good afternoon," I began, my voice ringing clear and steady through the microphone. "Over the past forty-eight hours, there have been numerous rumors regarding the stability of Sterling Enterprises and the legacy of my late father, David Sterling."

A reporter held up a microphone. "Miss Sterling! Apex Global claims you owe $30 million and cannot pay! Are you filing for bankruptcy today?"

Richard smirked from the sidelines.

I looked directly into the camera lenses. "Sterling Enterprises has never been stronger. And as for our debt to Apex Global..."

I signaled to Julian.

Julian walked onto the stage, holding a certified bank draft, and presented it directly to the lead executive of Apex Global sitting in the front row.

"...here is a certified check for $30 million, paying off our debt in full, plus interest," I announced.

The room erupted into wild chatter. Cameras flashed continuously. The Apex executives stared at the check in utter shock, their faces turning ghost-white.

"Wait!" Richard yelled from his wheelchair, trying to stand up against his restraints. "Where did she get that money?! That's illegal trust manipulation!"

"It is entirely legal, Mr. Vance," Julian interjected into a second microphone. "And while we're on the subject of legality, let's talk about Apex Global's short positions."

Julian tapped a remote, illuminating the massive screen behind the podium.

"Over the last two hours, Sterling Trust executed a targeted buy-back of 15% of all floating shares," Julian revealed, displaying live market charts. "Sterling stock has just surged by 180%. Apex Global’s short positions have just been liquidated, resulting in a net loss for Apex of $120 million."

Gasping and cheers echoed through the auditorium. The Apex executives panicked, pulling out their phones as their financial empire crumbled in real-time before the press.

Richard looked as if he had been struck by lightning. His eyes widened in absolute terror as he realized his entire scheme—years in the making—had just been obliterated in less than fifteen minutes.

"You little brat!" Richard screamed, thrashing against the police officers holding him. "You ruined everything!"

I looked down at him from the podium, feeling no anger—only absolute triumph.

"You ruined yourself, Richard," I said clearly into the microphone. "And now, it's time for you to answer for the rest of your crimes."
