Chapter 3 - Shadows at the Gate

By morning, the penthouse was bathed in autumn sunlight, but the warmth felt artificial against the storm brewing outside.
Nathan sat in his home office, watching Maisie color on the leather rug with new crayons his assistant had rushed over at 6:00 AM. Rowan was sleeping soundly in a bassinet nearby, his breathing steady, the bluish tint in his lips replaced by a healthy pink thanks to overnight oxygen therapy.
A sharp knock at the door signaled the arrival of Dr. Clara Vance—an independent child psychologist and distant cousin of the social worker—alongside Nathan’s top attorney, Vance Sterling.
“Nathan, this is insane,” Sterling began, setting a heavy leather briefcase on the desk. “Apex Development just filed an emergency petition claiming Daniel Reed owed them six figure debts for stolen company property. They’ve tipped off local news outlets that you’re harboring the kids of an accused corporate thief to leverage the Harbor Waterfront bid!”
“Let them spin whatever media narrative they want,” Nathan replied coolly, handing Maisie a orange crayon when she reached up. “What is the legal standing on custody?”
“Fragile,” Sterling admitted. “If Daniel Reed isn't found alive within forty-eight hours, the state assumes temporary ward status. Apex’s legal counsel is pushing for the kids to be placed in a state facility outside city jurisdiction—where, I suspect, they can manipulate access to them.”
Dr. Clara Vance walked over to Maisie, kneeling gracefully. She offered a warm smile, not pushing, just observing. “She’s extraordinarily resilient,” Clara remarked quietly to Nathan. “But she’s living in survival mode. Look at how she positions herself between you and the baby’s crib. She’s built an entire internal identity around being Rowan’s shield.”
“She shouldn't have to be a shield at four years old,” Nathan said, his chest tightening.
“Then you need to give her a fortress,” Clara replied, looking up at Nathan with keen, analytical eyes. “Are you prepared for what that means, Mr. Fisher? You’re a billionaire bachelor whose life revolves around quarterly projections and board meetings. Raising two traumatized children while fighting a hostile corporate war will destroy your current life.”
Nathan looked down at Maisie. She was carefully drawing a giant, bright yellow box around a small figure holding a baby. Above the box, she drew a tall man with a dark suit and a golden heart.
“My current life was empty anyway,” Nathan said quietly. “Tell me what I need to do.”

Before Clara could answer, the apartment’s internal security system chimed red. Marcus’s voice cut through the intercom, tense and rapid.
“Nathan, we’ve got a situation. Child Protective Services is in the lobby with a court order signed by Judge Vance—Apex’s pocket magistrate. They have three police officers with them. They’re coming up to take the children right now.”
