Chapter 8 - The Family We Choose

The autumn chill gave way to the soft light of early winter.

The Sarah Reed Children's Center officially broke ground six months later. Westfield Square, once a dark, cold place where a little girl hid in a cardboard box, was transformed by the city into a brightly lit public plaza, featuring a beautiful bronze sculpture of a small girl shielding a seedling from the wind.

On a crisp November afternoon, Nathan’s penthouse was filled with laughter, loud music, and the smell of hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies.

Daniel stood by the window, cradling Rowan—now a healthy, chubby six-month-old baby with bright blue eyes who babbled incessantly. Clara Vance sat on the rug, laughing as Maisie showed off her new winter coat—a bright yellow puffy jacket that made her look like a tiny sunbeam.

Nathan walked into the living room holding a large, wrapped present.

“Is that for me?” Maisie asked, jumping up and down with uncontrollable energy.

“It is,” Nathan smiled, kneeling on the floor.

Maisie tore through the wrapping paper eagerly, revealing a beautifully crafted wooden box with intricate carvings of stars and little birds. Inside lay a set of golden keys and a small leather-bound book.

“What’s this, Uncle Nathan?” she asked, looking up with curious dark eyes.

“Those are the keys to your new house down by the park,” Nathan said softly. “And this book is your college fund. No matter where you go, no matter how old you get, you and Rowan will always have a home, security, and a family that loves you.”

Maisie looked at the golden keys, then at her father, then back at Nathan. Without a word, she wrapped her small arms around Nathan’s neck, hugging him with all her strength.

“You’re my superhero,” she whispered against his collar.

Nathan wrapped his arms around her, closing his eyes, feeling a deep, overwhelming warmth flood his soul—a feeling no charity check or billionaire title could ever buy.
