Chapter 4 - The Legal Siege

The private elevator doors chimed open, revealing two social workers accompanied by uniformed police officers and a slick, sharp-faced attorney named Harrison Vance—Apex Development’s lead fixer.
“Nathan Fisher,” Harrison sneered, stepping into the foyer with an air of absolute authority. “You are unlawfully retaining minors linked to an ongoing criminal investigation into Daniel Reed. Hand over the children immediately.”
Nathan didn't move an inch. He stood in the center of the grand hallway, framed by two of his own armed private security officers. Behind him, Dr. Clara held Maisie gently, while the private nurse held Rowan inside the closed nursery.
“This is a private residence, Harrison,” Nathan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “And that emergency order you’re holding was signed by a municipal judge whose campaign received four hundred thousand dollars from Apex subsidiaries last spring.”
Harrison’s eyes narrowed. “The warrant is legal and enforceable. Officers, execute the order.”
One of the police officers hesitated, looking between the billionaire, the high-end security detail, and the legal papers in his hand. “Mr. Fisher, we just need to follow protocol—”
“Protocol ends where child endangerment begins,” Sterling cut in, stepping out from the office with his tablet in hand. “We filed a federal motion twenty minutes ago under the Safe Haven Protection Act, alleging active threats to the safety of these minors by corporate entities connected to Apex. Federal Marshals have taken jurisdiction over Daniel Reed’s criminal case.”
Harrison’s face flushed red. “You’re bluffing!”
“Try me,” Nathan said, taking two steps forward until he was standing inches from Harrison. The sheer presence of the young billionaire made the older lawyer retreat a step. “If you touch a single hair on either of those children, I will bankrupt your firm by noon. I will buy Apex’s outstanding debt, call in every loan, and put your board members in federal prison before the sun sets.”
A heavy silence hung over the foyer. The tension was palpable, broken only by the faint, distant sound of Maisie humming her soft, wordless lullaby from the back room.
The lead police officer stepped back. “We’re waiting for federal confirmation before we execute this order, counselor. Everyone stand down.”
Harrison glared at Nathan with raw venom. “This isn't over, Fisher. You don't know what Daniel Reed stole. You don't know what you’re dragging into your home.”
“I know exactly what I’m bringing into my home,” Nathan said, staring Harrison straight in the eye. “My family.”
The word echoed in the hallway long after Harrison and the officers stepped back into the elevator. Nathan turned around, his hands trembling slightly, only to find Maisie standing near the nursery door, holding Rowan’s small hand through the crib bars.
She looked up at Nathan, her pale face breaking into the first real, genuine smile he had ever seen on her face.

“You didn't let them take us,” she whispered.
“Never,” Nathan promised, kneeling down to her eye level. “Not today, not tomorrow, not ever.”
