Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Broken

The next three weeks were a whirlwind of recovery, legal processing, and profound emotional healing.

Daniel Reed spent ten days in the hospital recovering from cracked ribs, severe dehydration, and trauma. During that time, Nathan ensured that Daniel had the finest medical care money could buy, while Maisie and Rowan remained at the penthouse under Clara’s guidance and Nathan’s watchful eye.

Every afternoon, Nathan took Maisie to the hospital to visit her father. The reunion between Daniel and his children on the first day had brought the entire medical floor staff to tears—Maisie throwing her tiny arms around her father’s neck, refusing to let go for hours, while Daniel held baby Rowan against his chest, sobbing softly.

However, as Daniel’s discharge date approached, a new reality set in. Daniel had no home left, no job, no savings, and the grief of losing his wife, Sarah, still hung heavy over his heart.

One evening, while Maisie slept peacefully in her bedroom at the penthouse, Daniel sat across from Nathan in the glass study.

“I can never repay you, Mr. Fisher,” Daniel said quietly, staring into a cup of untouched tea. “You saved my children’s lives. You cleared my name. You destroyed the people who ruined us. But I have to take my kids and start over somewhere cheap. I can’t live off your charity.”

Nathan swirled his drink, looking out at the city lights. “Where would you go, Daniel? You’re grieving. You’re physically recovering. You have a newborn who needs constant care and a four-year-old who panics every time you walk out of a room.”

“I’m their father,” Daniel said, his voice cracking. “It’s my job to figure it out.”

“What if you didn't have to figure it out alone?” Nathan asked gently.

Nathan pulled out a leather folder and laid it on the desk between them.

“I bought the Harbor Waterfront Project,” Nathan explained. “The city awarded the development contract to my foundation yesterday. We’re turning the entire north district into a green community park, low-income family housing, and a specialized pediatric medical facility named the Sarah Reed Children's Center.”

Daniel gasped, looking up in disbelief.

“I need a head structural surveyor and site manager,” Nathan continued with a warm smile. “Someone honest. Someone who cares about the foundation of this city. The salary includes a home in the new estate district, full health coverage, and a permanent trust fund for Maisie and Rowan’s education.”

Daniel stared at the contract, his hands shaking uncontrollable. “Why... why would you do all this for strangers?”

Nathan walked to the window, looking at his reflection. “Three weeks ago, I had billions of dollars, three homes, and zero purpose. I was an empty man standing in expensive rooms pretending to care about charity. Maisie and Rowan didn't just need a blanket that night—they gave me a reason to be human again.”
