Chapter 9 - The Gala of Light

One year after the night in Westfield Square, the annual Winter Charity Gala was held once again at the Grand Hotel ballroom.

The room glittered with golden chandeliers, white tablecloths, crystal glasses, and elite donors. But this year, the atmosphere was vastly different.

Nathan Fisher stood near the grand entrance, wearing a dark suit, holding Dr. Clara Vance’s hand. Over the past year, their shared dedication to the children had blossomed into a deep, loving relationship built on mutual respect and genuine devotion.

Beside them stood Daniel Reed, dressed sharply, looking healthy, confident, and proud, conversing easily with city council members about the sustainable housing progress.

Suddenly, the string quartet stopped playing. The ballroom doors opened, and two special young guests entered escorted by Marcus.

Maisie wore a simple white dress with a yellow ribbon, holding hands with a walking, smiling toddler Rowan, who wore a miniature bow tie.

The room erupted into genuine applause—not the fake, scheduled compassion Nathan had hated a year ago, but real, heartfelt admiration for the family that had captivated the city’s heart.

Nathan stepped forward, taking the microphone at the main podium. He looked across the crowded room, his gaze resting on Clara, Daniel, Rowan, and finally on Maisie.

“A year ago, I stood in this exact room,” Nathan began, his voice calm, powerful, and deeply resonant. “I thought generosity was something you wrote on a check. I thought success was measured by net worth and portfolio growth. I was completely wrong.”

The ballroom was pin-drop silent.

“Generosity isn't about what you give from your pocket,” Nathan continued, looking directly into Maisie’s shining eyes. “It’s about what you’re willing to open your heart to when the world is cold. A four-year-old girl in a wet cardboard box taught me that love isn't something you wait to receive—it’s something you protect with everything you have.”

He lowered the microphone as the room filled with standing ovations. Maisie ran across the polished floor, her small shoes clicking softly against the marble, and threw herself into Nathan’s arms. He lifted her high into the air, her joyful laughter echoing under the golden chandeliers.
