Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

Later that evening, after the crowds had gone and the sun had dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of orange, crimson, and gold, Lily and Emma walked down to the cellar.
It was no longer a damp, terrifying dungeon smelling of mold and ancient dust.
The flagstone floor had been restored and polished, warm recessed lighting illuminated the exposed brick walls, and display cases held historical artifacts from Milfield’s past.
They walked to the far corner beneath the stairs.
The secret oak paneling had been removed permanently, replaced with a small bronze plaque mounted directly over the damp brick wall where Ethan had been trapped.
Emma read the inscription aloud in the soft, warm light:
“Here stood a wall built by fear. Here opened a door unlocked by courage. Dedicated to Lily and Emma Carter—August 21, 2026.”
"It feels strange," Emma murmured, touching the cool bronze plaque. "Thinking about how close we came to just walking away that day."
"We couldn't have walked away, Em," Lily said softly, looking at her identical sister. "You know that. We’re twins. If one of us hesitates, the other pushes forward. That's how we work."
"I guess so," Emma smiled, wrapping her hand into Lily's. "So... what's our next AP history project?"
Lily pulled out her camera, checking the battery level with a mischievous glint in her gray eyes. "Well, Dr. Thorne told me about an old abandoned lighthouse on the north cliff that's been locked since 1940..."
Emma let out a dramatic, exaggerated groan, throwing her hands up in the air. "Oh, no! Not a lighthouse! Lily, I swear, if we find a lost pirate in an attic this time, I'm making you pay for my therapy!"

Lily laughed—a bright, ringing sound that filled the newly restored cellar, sweeping away the last lingering ghosts of the past.
Hand in hand, the twin sisters walked up the stone stairs together, leaving the darkness behind and stepping up into the warm, peaceful light of their new home.
