Chapter 2 - The Shadow on the Stairs

"He's back," Ethan whispered, horror draining what little color remained in his face. He grabbed Lily's wrist with surprising strength. "You girls have to run. If Arthur sees you... if he knows you found me..."
"We're not leaving you," Lily said fiercely.
"Lily, he's right!" Emma panicked, her voice barely a breath. "There's only one staircase! We're trapped down here!"
Lily looked around the cellar wildly. The flashlight beam swept past old coal bins, rusted boiler pipes, and a low arched doorway near the back wall that had been choked off with broken pallets and coal dust.
"There," Lily pointed. "The old coal chute. It leads to the side yard."
"It's blocked," Emma said.
"Then we unblock it! Move!"
Working in absolute silence, driven by pure adrenaline, the twins grabbed Ethan under his arms, hauling his weak, exhausted frame out of the hidden room and dragging him toward the rear of the cellar. Lily scrambled over the pile of rotting pallets, kicking away the brittle wood with her boots while Emma kept her light trained on the main staircase.
Above them, the cellar door squeaked open.
A bright, beam of light cut through the gloom at the top of the stairs, followed by the smooth, chilling voice of a man who sounded utterly unbothered.
"Ethan?" Arthur Reynolds called out, his shoes clicking down the first three steps. "I brought you some water, dear cousin. And the revised paperwork. The market opens in two hours, and I really need those digital signatures before the press catches wind of your sudden 'sabbatical.'"
Lily squeezed herself through the narrow coal chute, reaching down from the muddy trench outside to grab Ethan’s hands. "Pull, Emma! Push him up!"
Emma threw her back against Ethan's boots, heaving him upward through the metal chute just as Arthur reached the bottom of the cellar stairs.
Arthur stopped. His eyes fell on the wide-open secret panel beneath the staircase. The iron bar hung loose, dripping fresh grease onto the floor.
"What the...?" Arthur's polite tone vanished, replaced by an ugly, guttural rage. "Ethan?!"
Arthur’s flashlight beam swept across the cellar floor, locking onto the disturbed coal dust and the pair of legs disappearing through the coal chute.
"You bastards!" Arthur roared, dropping his leather briefcase and lunging across the room.
"Go! Go! Go!" Emma screamed, throwing herself up through the chute just as Arthur’s gloved hand snapped at her sneaker, his fingers grazing her heel before she kicked frantically, breaking his grip.
They burst out into the overgrown brambles along the side of Hillrest Manor. Rain had begun to fall, turning the long grass slick and dark. Lily helped Ethan to his feet while Emma bolted toward the front drive, where their bicycles were hidden in the bushes.
"My car," Ethan gasped, pointing a shaking finger toward the black Bentley parked near the overgrown gates. "The keys... Arthur took them, but I have a secondary key fob... sewn into my jacket lining..."
Lily didn't ask questions. She ripped open the seam near Ethan’s collar, pulled out a small black remote, and slammed the unlock button. The Bentley’s headlights flashed white in the rainy gloom.
"Get in!" Lily shouted, shoving Ethan into the back seat while Emma scrambled into the passenger side.
As Lily threw herself into the driver's seat and hit the push-start button, the heavy front doors of Hillrest Manor burst open. Arthur Reynolds charged down the porch steps, his face contorted in fury, holding an iron crowbar.

"Stop!" Arthur screamed, sprinting toward the vehicle.
Lily slammed the Bentley into reverse. The tires spun on the wet gravel, spitting mud and stone into the air, before catching traction. She spun the wheel, shifted into drive, and floored the accelerator, crashing straight through the rotting wooden gates of Hillrest Manor just as Arthur swung the crowbar, shattering the rear windshield into a thousand glittering pieces.
