Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

By noon, Milfield was swept up in an unprecedented media frenzy.
The arrest of Arthur Reynolds hit national headlines: MILLIONAIRE HELD CAPTIVE IN HISTORIC MANOR: TEEN TWINS EXPOSE DECADES OF FRAUD.
State police forensically swept Hillrest Manor, uncovering not only the secret cellar room where Ethan had been held, but a vault containing millions of dollars in stolen bonds, fake property deeds, and evidence clearing dozens of local families who had been illegally evicted by the Reynolds family over the past thirty years.
Aunt Sarah had been brought to the police station by state troopers, not under arrest, but for her own protection. When she finally walked into the conference room where Lily and Emma were drinking juice and finishing their statements, she threw her arms around both girls, weeping uncontrollably.
"You two absolute idiots!" Aunt Sarah sobbed, pulling back to look at their bruised, dirt-streaked faces. "You could have been killed! You were supposed to be taking pictures of old porches!"
"Technically," Lily offered with a weak, nervous smile, "Hillrest Manor has a very historic porch."
"Don't you dare be witty right now, Lily Carter!" Sarah scolded, though she pulled them both back into a tight hug, kissing their foreheads. "I am so proud of you... but you are grounded until you're thirty."
The door opened, and Ethan Reynolds walked in, accompanied by his head of security, Vance—a tall, imposing man in a tailored suit—and Dr. Evelyn Thorne.
Ethan looked transformed. He had shaved, dressed in a fresh charcoal suit, and though he still looked tired, his eyes were bright, clear, and full of life.
"Sarah," Ethan bowed his head respectfully. "I owe you an apology for the terror your nieces endured today. And an eternal debt of gratitude."
"They're alive, Mr. Reynolds," Sarah said, stepping forward. "That's all that matters to me."
"It matters to me, too," Ethan said warmly. He turned to Vance, who stepped forward holding two thick leather-bound folders.
"As of one hour ago," Ethan announced, "the court has granted me full, unencumbered control of the Reynolds Estate and all its subsidiary holdings. My first official act as trustee was to liquidate Arthur's seized assets."
Ethan handed a document to Aunt Sarah.
"What is this?" Sarah asked, her eyes scanning the legal text.
"A fully funded, irrevocable trust in Lily and Emma's names," Ethan revealed. "Four million dollars each, set aside for their education, future businesses, and housing. And full ownership of the Milfield Community Historical Preservation Fund."

Emma gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Mr. Reynolds... we can't accept that!"
"You didn't just save my life, Emma," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. "You gave me back my dignity. You ended twenty-five years of horror that haunted my every waking dream. Money cannot repay that, but it can ensure that two extraordinary young women never have to worry about their future again."
