Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Dark

Emma dropped her teacup. It shattered against the hardwood floor, spilling hot tea across the rug, but no one moved to clean it up.
"Aunt Sarah," Emma choked out, grabbing Lily's shoulder. "Lily, he has Aunt Sarah!"
"Calm down, Emma, let me think!" Lily snatched up her phone, her fingers flying across the screen as she dialed her aunt's mobile.
It rang four times before going straight to voicemail.
"He's watching the hospital," Lily said, her breath coming in quick, shallow gasps. "Or he already has someone there. Arthur has money, he has security guards..."
"No," Ethan said firmly, standing up despite his weakness. "Arthur is a coward. He uses intimidation because he’s losing control. He doesn't want to kill Sarah unless he has to—that brings the state police. He wants to trade her for me."
"We call the police right now," Dr. Thorne insisted, reaching for her landline. "This is kidnapping and extortion!"
"If you call the police, Arthur’s contacts in the precinct will tip him off," Ethan warned, holding up a hand. "The Reynolds family has paid off the Milfield Police Department for thirty years. Chief Henderson owes his position to Arthur."
Lily looked at Ethan, her gray eyes narrowing as her sharp, analytical mind began to connect the dots. "The camera... at the gate."
"What about it?" Emma asked, wiping tears from her face.
"When we drove through the gate, I didn't see any security cameras on the stone pillars," Lily said, pulling out her camera and flipping through the photos she had taken when they first arrived at Hillrest Manor. "Look. I took three wide-angle shots of the entrance. There are no cameras there. Arthur was lying."
Ethan leaned over her shoulder, looking at the crisp digital images on the camera screen. "She's right. Arthur bluffing to panic you into revealing our location."
"But he still knows who we are," Emma pointed out, holding up her own phone. "Our school backpacks were left in the cellar, Lily! Our student IDs are inside them!"
Silence descended on the living room. The mistake was fatal. Arthur didn't need security cameras; he had their names, home addresses, and family details right in the palm of his hand.
"Then we don't play his game," Lily declared, a fierce coldness settling into her voice. "We play ours."
"What are you thinking, Lily?" Ethan asked, fascinated by the sixteen-year-old’s sudden shift from terrified teenager to tactical strategist.
"Arthur wants you to sign away the Reynolds Trust before the stock market opens at 9:00 AM tomorrow," Lily laid out, pointing to her camera display. "He thinks he has us cornered. So we give him what he wants—a meeting. But not at Hillrest, and not on his terms."
"Where?" Dr. Thorne asked.
"The public library," Lily smiled darkly. "It’s the oldest building in town, packed with security cameras, civic archives, and people. And more importantly... it has a basement vault that connects directly to the old town hall."

Ethan looked at the girl, a slow, proud smile spreading across his pale face. "You want to trap him in a public place where he can't use a gun or his security team."
"No," Lily corrected, holding up her camera memory card. "I want to trap him in front of every reporter in the state."
