Chapter 7 - The Collapse of an Empire

Arthur froze, the suppressor-fitted pistol trembling in his hand as the television camera lights burned into his eyes.
"Lower your weapon, Arthur," Detective Martinez commanded, stepping forward slowly. "We have your burner phone calls recorded, your entry into this building logged, and a search warrant currently being executed at Hillrest Manor."
"This is a setup!" Arthur shrieked, his voice cracking as he looked wildly around the room. "Miller! Burke! Get me out of here!"
Miller and Burke looked at the state police officer, then at the camera crews broadcasting their faces across the state, and slowly raised their hands in the air, dropping their weapons to the floor.
"Smart move," Martinez said.
"You can't do this!" Arthur screamed, backing toward the rear exit. "I own this town! My family built Milfield!"
"Your family built it on stolen land and hidden rooms, Arthur," a voice called out from the gallery balcony above.
Arthur looked up. Standing near the iron railing were Lily and Emma, holding Lily's camera, which was wired directly to the news broadcast truck parked outside.
"We found the secondary ledger in the cellar, Arthur," Lily said, her voice echoing clearly through the high ceiling of the library. "The one you hid behind the brickwork in 1999. It logs every bribe, every land grab, and every dollar you laundered through the Reynolds Trust."
"You little brats!" Arthur bellowed, raising his gun toward the balcony in a fit of mad desperation.
BANG!
Detective Martinez fired a single shot, striking Arthur in the shoulder. The gun flew from Arthur’s hand, clattering across the marble floor as he collapsed to his knees, howling in pain, blood soaking through his expensive coat.
Within seconds, three state troopers swarmed over the gallery, pinning Arthur to the floor and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Ethan stood up slowly from the reading table, walking over to his bleeding cousin. He looked down at him not with anger, but with deep, pitying contempt.
"Twenty-five years ago, my father locked me in that room to take my future," Ethan said softly as the troopers hauled Arthur to his feet. "Today, you locked yourself in a cage for the rest of your life."
As the police dragged Arthur away, camera flashes illuminating his face in disgrace, Mrs. Gable turned off her megaphone and looked up at the balcony, giving the twins a proud, triumphant nod.
Emma let out a long, shuddering breath, leaning against the railing. "Is it... is it really over?"

Lily looked down at her camera screen, where the image of Arthur in handcuffs was frozen in sharp, high-definition clarity.
"No," Lily smiled softly, wrapping her arm around her sister's shoulder. "It's just the beginning."
