Chapter 2 - The Conspiracy Unraveled

Within forty-five seconds, four heavy-set hospital security guards and two uniformed Austin police officers burst onto the maternity floor. Daniel was tackled to the floor right outside the room door, dropping to his knees and weeping as the guards wrenched his arms behind his back.

Richard tried to shove the infant toward Jessica, but Nurse Sarah intercepted him, snatching the baby safely into her arms with practiced grace before backing away into the hallway.

"Get your hands off me!" Richard roared as two officers slammed him against the wall, slapping steel handcuffs around his wrists. "That is my grandchild! I have every right to decide where he goes!"

"You're under arrest for felony assault, breaking and entering, and attempted child abduction," Officer Rivera snapped, tightening the cuffs until Richard winced.

Maya was surrounded by medical staff within seconds. An ice pack was pressed against her bleeding head while two nurses carefully checked her surgical incision to ensure the trauma hadn't ruptured her internal stitches.

"Maya... Maya, can you hear me?" Nurse Sarah asked gently, placing the unharmed baby boy back into his bassinet beside his two sleeping sisters.

"My babies..." Maya sobbed, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "Are they all okay?"

"They are perfectly safe," Sarah reassured her, wiping a tear from Maya’s bruised cheek. "All three of them are right here."

An hour later, as the police finished taking Maya’s preliminary statement, the door to the room flew open.

David burst through, looking pale, disheveled, and completely out of breath. He had abandoned his luggage at the airport terminal and sprinted through the hospital corridors the moment his taxi pulled up to the main entrance.

"Maya!" David gasped, dropping to his knees beside her bed and gathering her gently into his arms, minding her injuries. "Oh my God, Maya! I came as fast as I could! The police called me while I was on the tarmac!"

Maya buried her face into her husband's neck, sobbing uncontrollably. "They tried to take him, David... Dad hit me... they were going to take our son..."

David’s face turned into a mask of pure, terrifying fury. He looked over at Officer Rivera, who was standing quietly near the corner of the room. "Where are they?"

"They are in custody at the Travis County Central Booking facility," Officer Rivera explained. "Your father-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law are all being held without bail pending formal arraignment. But Mr. Vance, there's something else you need to know."

Officer Rivera pulled out a sealed plastic evidence bag containing a thick manila folder retrieved from Jessica’s handbag at the scene.

"When we searched the suspects' personal belongings," Rivera continued, "we found notarized adoption application papers, fake birth certificate registration forms, and emails between your father-in-law and a disgraced former family law attorney in San Antonio."

David stared at the officer. "What are you talking about?"

May you like

"This wasn't an impulsive decision made in the heat of the moment," Rivera said grimly. "They had been planning this for over four months. They paid an illegal broker eight thousand dollars to create counterfeit birth records naming Daniel and Jessica Vance as the biological parents of one of your unborn triplets."

Maya gasped, the air rushing out of her lungs. They hadn't just taken advantage of David being in London. They had set the entire stage, waiting for the exact right moment to steal her baby and erase his existence on paper forever.
