Chapter 6 - The Web of Greed

The full depth of the conspiracy was far darker than anyone had initially imagined. It was never just about a desperate, childless couple, nor was it merely about settling a three-million-dollar business debt.
It was a cold, calculated, twelve-million-dollar land heist orchestrated by a father who viewed his daughter as nothing more than an incubator for his financial salvation.
Two days later, Rachel Chen, the Assistant District Attorney, called David and Maya into her office at the courthouse.
"We’ve revised the indictment," Rachel said, placing a thick stack of financial audits on her desk. "We are now charging Richard Vance with Grand Larceny, Bank Fraud, Conspiracy to Commit Forgery, and Attempted Fraudulent Inheritance Seizure, in addition to the kidnapping and assault charges."
"What about my mother?" Maya asked, her hands trembling in her lap. "Eleanor?"
Rachel looked at Maya with a compassionate expression. "Your mother signed a full confession two hours ago, Maya."
Maya blinked back tears. "She confessed?"
"She realized she was facing up to twenty years in federal prison," Rachel explained. "She agreed to turn state's evidence and testify against Richard, Daniel, and Jessica in exchange for a reduced charge of misprision of a felony and probation. She gave us full access to all encrypted text threads and bank transfers."
Rachel turned her computer monitor toward Maya and David.
On the screen was a group text thread between Richard, Jessica, and Daniel from three months before the birth.
Jessica: "What if Maya has girls?" Richard: "The ultrasound confirmed at least two are boys. We take the strongest one. Once the paperwork is filed with the corrupt county clerk I paid off, the trust assets release automatically within fourteen days." Daniel: "Is the attorney sure Maya can't contest it once it's finalized?" Richard: "By the time she realizes what happened, the money will already be moved into foreign accounts. She won't have the financial resources to fight us in court."
Maya sat completely motionless. Every warm memory she had ever held of her father shattered into dust. He had planned to destroy her life, bankrupt her husband, steal her son, and leave her with nothing, all while pretending to be a stern, caring patriarch.
"I want to testify," Maya said, her voice dropping all remaining traces of hesitation.

David turned to look at her, surprised. "Maya, you don't have to put yourself through a trial. The DA has enough evidence to put them away forever."
"No," Maya said firmly, looking directly at Rachel Chen. "I spent my whole life being quiet because I was afraid of my father's anger. I let him make me feel small. I let him tell me I was weak. I want to stand in that courtroom, look him in the eye, and tell the jury exactly what he did to my children."
