Chapter 3 - The Cold Truth

The next morning, Detective Evelyn Carter of the Austin Police Department Child Exploitation and Family Violence Unit sat in the armchair beside Maya’s bed. David stood beside his wife, holding her hand firmly, while all three bassinets were arranged securely around Maya's bed, guarded by a dedicated police officer posted outside the door.
"Mrs. Vance," Detective Carter began, opening her notepad. "We've spent the last twelve hours executing search warrants on your father's house in Westlake and your brother's home in Round Rock. What we found goes far beyond a domestic custody dispute."
Maya’s voice was small and shaking. "What did you find?"
"In your father’s home office, we recovered a digital voice recorder," Detective Carter revealed. "It contains audio files of family meetings stretching back to your fifth month of pregnancy. Your mother, father, brother, and sister-in-law were all active participants."
Detective Carter pressed play on a small digital recording device set on the bedside tray.
Eleanor's voice came through the speaker, high-pitched and anxious: "What if Maya refuses? What if David goes to the police?"
Richard’s cold, harsh voice answered without hesitation: "Maya is soft. She's always been weak. Once the baby is in Daniel’s house, we tell her that if she reports it, we will destroy David’s career. I have enough dirt on his firm's managing partners to ruin him financially. She’ll accept it to protect her husband."
Jessica’s voice joined in, sounding chillingly triumphant: "We already picked out the name. We're calling him Oliver. The nursery at our house is completely painted and furnished."
David’s hand squeezed Maya’s so tightly his knuckles turned white. "They were going to blackmail us?"
"That’s not all," Detective Carter added, stopping the tape. "We audited your father’s financial records. Richard’s real estate development company went bankrupt six months ago. He was operating under heavy debt. He struck a deal with Jessica’s wealthy parents: if he secured a child for Jessica and Daniel to pass off as their own, her family agreed to clear Richard’s three-million-dollar commercial debt."
Maya pulled her hand away from David’s and covered her mouth, a wave of profound nausea hitting her. Her father hadn't just tried to steal her child out of twisted family loyalty toward Daniel.
He had sold her baby to save his failing business.
"They didn't see my son as a human being," Maya whispered, her tears dripping onto the hospital blanket. "He was a transaction."
"Every single one of them—your father, mother, brother, and sister-in-law—have been indicted by a grand jury," Detective Carter stated firmly. "The charges include Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Kidnapping, Felony Child Endangerment, Aggravated Assault, and Fraud. The District Attorney is refusing any plea bargain options."
"Good," David spat out, his eyes blazing with rage. "I want them to rot in prison for the rest of their lives."

"They will face a judge tomorrow morning for their bail hearing," Carter said. "Because your father has substantial financial connections overseas, we are arguing that he presents an extreme flight risk. We need both of you to sign formal protective order requests today."
"Where do I sign?" Maya said, her voice suddenly stripping away all hesitation, replacing her shock with a cold, terrifying resolve. "I want to sign it right now."
