Chapter 4 - The Bail Hearing

The Travis County Courthouse was packed with local news reporters when David arrived the following afternoon. Maya remained at the hospital recovering from her injuries, but David refused to let her family face a judge without him present in the courtroom.
Richard, Daniel, Jessica, and Eleanor were led into the jury box wearing bright orange jail jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles chained together. Eleanor was weeping openly, her hair disheveled. Jessica looked furious, staring at the polished wood floor. But Richard sat up straight, glaring across the room at David with cold contempt.
A high-profile criminal defense attorney named Marcus Thorne stood beside them.
"Your Honor," Thorne argued before Judge Amanda Reyes, adjusting his expensive suit jacket. "My clients are pillar members of the Austin community with no prior criminal records. What occurred at the hospital was a tragic, emotionally charged misunderstanding among grieving family members suffering from extreme stress."
"A misunderstanding?" David shouted from the gallery, standing up. "He hit my wife and tried to steal our newborn son!"
"Order in the court!" Judge Reyes barked, slamming her gavel down hard. "Mr. Vance, sit down. Counselor Thorne, do not insult this court's intelligence. I have reviewed the digital recordings and the physical evidence recovered from your clients' homes."
Thorne didn't flinch. "Your Honor, Mr. Richard Vance is willing to post a cash bond of five hundred thousand dollars. He poses no threat to the community and simply wishes to resolve this sensitive family matter privately."
The Assistant District Attorney, Rachel Chen, stepped up to the podium. "Your Honor, the state requests that all four defendants be held without bail. This was a premeditated, financially motivated criminal conspiracy involving the assault of a post-operative mother and the attempted abduction of a four-pound infant. Furthermore, we have evidence that Richard Vance attempted to liquidate two offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands late last night through a third-party broker."
Judge Reyes looked over her reading glasses at Richard, her expression icy.
"Mr. Richard Vance," Judge Reyes said, her voice echoing in the silent courtroom. "Your actions demonstrate an appalling lack of basic humanity, conscience, and respect for the law. You manipulated your family into committing an unthinkable crime against your own daughter."
Richard cleared his throat, leaning toward his microphone. "Your Honor, if I may speak—"
"You may not," Judge Reyes cut him off sharply. "Bail for Richard Vance is DENIED. You will remain in custody at the Travis County Correctional Complex pending trial."
Eleanor let out a sharp sob, slumping back against the bench.
"As for Daniel Vance and Jessica Vance," Judge Reyes continued, "Bail is set at two million dollars each, with mandatory GPS ankle monitoring, total surrender of all passports, and an immediate, absolute protective order barring any contact—direct or indirect—with Maya Vance, David Vance, or their children."

David watched as the bailiffs unceremoniously hauled Richard and his accomplices back through the steel side door. As Richard passed David’s seat, he leaned in slightly, his voice a low, raspy whisper: "This isn't over, David. You won't win."
David looked his father-in-law dead in the eye. "You've already lost, Richard. You just don't know it yet."
